I'm in the position of I don't get paid for 2 weeks so I can't buy another axle out of the junkyard so I'm kind of scared to pull the cover off and look in there tomorrow

I would not be worried it it still drove fine. Pull the cover and check for other damage. If all looks good clean it out and get a new cover from the parts store and fill it with oil.

Do you think it would be possible to just weld the hole closed?

I'm guessing it's the 10 bolt rear axle with the G80 Gov-Loc option? If so, the "Gov-Bomb" blew apart and sent pieces flying inside. Pull the cover and remove the pieces before they get lodged in the ring/pinion gear and things really go kablooey. Then patch/replace the cover and fill with fluid.

what is the code for the gov lock? It started doing this after I broke the rear driveline trying to pull a stump out of my dad's yard during thanksgiving weekend

There will be the G80 code in the glove box if you have it.

Can you tell for sure it came from the inside out? It couldn't have been a rock or something got kicked up and hit it?

yeah the whole is about the size of an eraser on a pencil maybe smaller and it is pushed out. Looks kind of like say a 22 round going through thin sheet metal.

I'd take it off and see what happened... mostly because the curiosity would be killing me. That and it would be good to know if you can keep going or if you're on borrowed time.

well I was wanting to change the rear end to a 1999-06 with disc brakes so being on borrowed time isn't too bad

Do you have to have a parking brake? If not, I've seen someone put rear discs on a 10 bolt axle using commonly found stock parts from the front of GM trucks.
