Does anyone know what the average/acceptable oil consumption might be for a 5.0L "H" series engine with 65k miles? When I started work on this original and stock truck (52.4K), a compression check showed #1 @ 175 and the remaining cylinders @ 180-190 psi. A small amount of soot accumulates in the tail pipe but there is never any visible smoke on startup or while driving, even when I open the secondaries. Early on, I replaced all sixteen valve guide seals. It currently uses about a quart between oil changes every 3-3.5k miles. The truck runs and shifts GREAT! However, there is quite a bit of wear on the right side of the brake pedal.
I’ve heard the story before. It’s great and the truck is too!
A clean good runnin 40 year old small block uses a quart between oil changes? And you’ve putted around putting 1500 miles per year on it for the last 8 years with no issues and you’re questioning it??
OMG find something else to worry about. Seriously.
Or go run the beans out of it and see if you can blow the carbon out of it.

I got a lower mile factory big block that is about 15 years newer in the 86. Sometimes it uses a qt or 2 in a surprisingly short amount of time. Sometimes it doesn’t. Runs great doesn’t smoke and life’s too short to worry about a little oil.
Just annoying we actually gotta check the oil…

Make sure the hoses and filter are good and not plugged as well as the port at the carbureator isn't plugged.
Thanks again, Rick. Which filter are you referring to, air, canister, or? As for the fuel happener thingy, I'm really confused now. How the hell is the thing correctly spelled? Am I going to have to ask Seri (sp)?

There's a filter for the pcv it's about as big as a business card. It is in the factory air cleaner housing,on the passenger side. It filters air that goes through a tube that goes to the passenger side valve cover.Thats how filtered air gets into the engine so the pcv can draw air through the engine.

Carter Carburetor would agree with you

How about the British English spelling- carburettor, or Aussie slang- carby.

My 1989 big block has variable oil consumption too - sometimes a little, sometimes none, sometimes more than I expected. I just check the fluids every time I fill up and tell people it identifies as British....

Good description. Lol
I’ve never had a variable consumption engine before this one, that I recall. Some used oil and most didn’t.
