Hi all! Figured I should join a discussion board since I've got free time now after graduating pilot training.

I've had my little 1987 R10 since I was a High School sophomore and she's been my constant companion through college and flight school. Been in the family since new.

Originally it had a 305, but it wouldn't have done well driving to college so we put a rebuilt 350 in, swapped in 3.73 gears (the dif is still open though), and had a custom dual exhaust installed (hedman long tubes into the cats, then to an x-pipe, through thrush 21'' glasspacks, 2.5" pipe throughout). When it came time to rebuild the tranny I had a 5 pinion planetary put in, new clutch packs, and a B&M shift kit. Super reliable truck, just not the fastest around

Nice truck... apparently you are unaware that racing stripes add 50hp. She must be fast ;). Too bad its not red, red cars go faster.

Welcome to GMSB !!! Nice looking truck. Love to hear those stories about the ones that have been in the family since new.

But, Sorry to hear you wasted your money on a 5 Pinion Planet when there are many other worthy upgrades to help keep a 700r4 alive. It's actually rare that a Pinion Planet fails and on the ones that do, it's usually at 500hp and above. Kinda like sleeving the input shaft. Not really needed unless you're often over 5500 rpm or some mega hp. Doesn't mean these failures can't happen to stockers, but it's very very rare. Things like Vette Servo, Beast Sunshell, Commerical Pack or Z pack 3-4 clutch pack are all stocker type upgrades that are needed along with a couple valve repairs in the VB.
