Recently I went mudding and flipped my 1985 Chevy Silverado 2500 4wd. Now I smashed my cab and I need to know whether or not I am able to swap out my 85s cab and replace it with a Scottsdale cab or any other year of truck. I'm not to sure if all of the ports will line up properly. I do know door panels will be different but I need to know what would be the best replacement cab.

The best replacement cab would be an '81-'87 K-cab. The second best would be an '81-'87 C-cab because the trans humps are different with the C having a smaller hump. That may be irrelevant if you're running a lift, however.

Doe it matter if it's a k10 or k20 or will either work?

And going about this I would have to detach all connecting lines that are ran through the cab correct?

Oh, yeah. If you're trying to get off in one whole piece it'd be the parking brake cable, speedometer cable, accelerator cable, shift linkage, transfer case linkage, steering column to intermediate steering shaft, brake lines, heater lines, A/C accumulator/evaporator lines, all the cab mounts, all the wiring... That's all I can think of. I'm sure there's a little more, but that's the main stuff. The more cautious you are with the wiring, the better off you'll be getting your "new" truck up and running. Unplug as much as can be unplugged, and if you have to cut wires, keep track of where every single one of them went to avoid confusion with the replacement cab. And glad you're okay! Square bodies are tough!

Your mirror is significantly farther out than mine on my 88' Suburban.

I didn't know they made longer arms for these style mirrors, I thought you had to get the big 3 arm triangle mounted tow mirrors that were on my 76' Dually.

How do I get these longer arms for my mirrors?

Since you're in California here's something to consider. California bases the title on the frame of the vehicle, not the cab like a lot of people think. If you re-cab, I would go with a 4x4 81-87 cab as it has the high hump for the transmission and transfer case. If you run a body lift, you can use a 2WD cab. Keep any paperwork for both cabs, it will save issues with CHP, DMV and future buyers.

Sorry to hear about the truck. Glad to know everyone is all good though.

You should have no issues with swapping any K-series cab in place of the old one regarding fitment. 73-80 cabs were different in that the glass was thicker and the window regulators and windshield wipers were a bit different. So as long as you find an 81+ cab you should be smooth sailings.

Take your time to get it all sorted out. Take a lot of pictures to help show exactly where everything originally connected to so you don't forget by the time the new cab goes on.

You may need to get an amended vin number or may be able to use the original one. Contact your local CHP office, they know the in's and out's of making sure the numbers and title is all good to go.
