Hi, I just got my first square body about a week ago. It's a 84 Suburban C20. Can anyone tell me what this thing on the rear axle is?

Thanks!

Alright, I thought it might be something like that. Haven't seen that on a rwd before.
Thanks

It can't be an axle disconnect, that's a semi-floater axle. That contraption is also way too small to handle any kind of drivetrain load.

What is printed on it?

I'll check when I get back from Germany sometime in October. Can't tell from pictures, I did notice that it's only on the driver side.

Spare key holder? I had a magnetic one I kept inside the rear bumper. They have them that slip inside receiver hitches now. The irony is that you still need a key to access your spare key. Got me

Looks like it says McGard, which lends me to think spare key holder too.

Weird

What would the key look like after a road trip? Maybe a tumbler for making pea stone.

It's only going to tumble until you hit 10 or 15 mph, after that it would plant the key on the wall pretty steady. Not sure that would be the best place I could think of for a spare key, but it would be covered by the hubcaps and still be accessible with only moderate tools, so maybe?

Funs tory, a friend in high school always locked her keys in the car. We convinced her to hide a spare, so she did. Under the hood. Still had to call her dad out to unlock it...
