Greetings from CA.

Picked up this 1976 Chevrolet Suburban C20 a couple months ago:

It's mostly original. One owner from 1976 until just now. It's got 108,000 miles. Here are the stats:

- Silverado pkg
- L-code 350, 4 bbl Rochester Quadrajet
- 40 gallon gas tank option
- 2wd 3/4 ton (C20)
- best part: Muncie SM465 4speed manual trans w/ "granny gear"
- factory non-a/c
- factory cruise control on a non-tilt column
- 14 bolt corporate rear end with as-yet-unknown gearing (guessing 3.73:1)

It needs some TLC as it had been sitting around for a few years. Here's what I've done so far:

- installed Hooker 2.25" header-back (it came with CA-legal headers) with Thrush glasspacks (hey, it looks the part, might as well sound the part)
- full tune and oil change
- replaced the relatively new but heat soaked mess of a starter with a PowerMaster XS unit (holy cow, what an awesome Amercian-made starter. Can you love a starter? I do.)
- repaired the automatic rear window switch in the dash for the power tailgate window and greased the tailgate window tracks for less draw on the motor (but the motor is still not long for this world)

Here's what I need to do:

- fix the choke thermostat. Got a new one on order from RockAuto but I'm going to need to figure out a good way to fix the screw that broke off in the intake manifold (factory cast iron) when removing the original divorced-choke thermostat
- fix the gas filler situation: This bothers me quite a bit. I should probably make another thread, but quickly... I cannot put anywhere near 40 gallons in this tank. It shuts off too quick. In fact the gas barely goes into the tank at all when I fill up. I have to be very easy on the pump - like only depressing the lever 5-10% or it'll shutoff. Maddening. What makes the problem more aggravating is the fuel gauge behaves normally - reading near full about putting about 17 or so gallons is and will march on down to full Empty. I've measured the gas tank and run the calculations - it's a 40 gallon tank. Okay, I've typed too much. Thread required. Here's a pic to make up for it:

New PowerMaster XS unit compared to what came off:

Anyway, hello to all!

Howdy! That's a great looking Burb!

It's odd to see upper trim only on a Burb with the Silverado option. I thought all Silverados go upper and lower trim.

Is that an '86 Camaro 3rd brake light?

Your fuel gauge is probably normal, both my Burbs have 8-10 gallons left when the gauge reads empty. Also, the vent on top of the tank is probably plugged up.

Ah ha! You confirmed my suspicions. This truck came with a truck-load (ahem) of extra parts and trim pieces were some of them. It's had a repaint and it seems to have had a slight bit of customization in the trim department.

Also, yeah, the former owner added that third brake light. I was going to pull it off, but the other night while backing up it added enough light to keep me from backing into the house, so now I'm conflicted :)

It's got a host of other mods like CB, weird steel mounts on the roof for some sort of large rack, steel tool box bolted in the engine compartment with a lock (for which I didn't get a key with the truck, so I had to have a locksmith pick it and reveal its contents), hand made curtains for the interior that cover the entire collection of windows all the way around with buttons in the interior trim to snap the curtains into, always-on recirculating fan shut-off switch, garhugic dash light for the parking brake (so old eyes will notice the parking brake still on), and probably some other stuff I'm forgetting. Overall the P.O. was pretty meticulous so unlike some other cars I've purchased and gone through, this one's mods don't make me entirely crazy. The mod that I don't appreciate is the way he cut up the interior sheet metal for asymmetrically arranged Sony X-Plod speakers. I'll be undoing that - with a welder more than likely. :(
