Need help timing ?

1981 350 I replaced the intake and carburetor with new edelebrock having a hard time with timing I think could not get it to start at all but now it will run as long as I stand there and squirt fuel in carb but the truck is running at like 6000 rpm’s not sure what is wrong or what to do any help please

Does it run without back firing?
Check the firing order.
Find TDC and make sure the balancer ring hasn't shifted.
Google both vacuum and intake leak.

I have always used a tube with a dog toy squeaker in the spark plug hole so when it gets to top dead center you can hear it. Never once had a problem. Easy to do when working by yourself

A TDC whistle is like $15-20.

There's no way it should idle anywhere near that high unless it has a massive vacuum leak. Did you make sure you capped/plugged all the unused ports?

Make sure the throttle plates are closed, items like stuck fast idle cam/linkage, throttle cable adjustment?
