305 for right now
I have an 86 K10 with a tired 305 (never liked the 305 to begin with to be honest). I'm looking to buy a 350 crate motor and build it to make 300-350 HP. I'm looking to spend less than $3,000 if possible, but may go up depending on what I need to make a good motor. What is a good recipe for this? I'd like to know cams, heads, carb, intake, headers, etc., everything I will need for a runner. If I can carry over some parts from the 305 I would be okay with that as well. Thanks in advance for everyone's help. I know some of this has been covered in other threads, but could never find exactly what I was looking for.

Also, I'd like to use the stock 700R4 (if it will handle that power), but it will most likely need a rebuild. Have you guys used Monster Transmission for rebuild kits and if so how is the quality?

Goodwrench Crate 350 with a small cam, header's, and a 4bbl will get you to your incredibly realistic goal.

I have no used Monster for their kit, but I did buy a transmission from them once. I lived in Cleveland at the time, had it installed by a shop, picked it up, shifted great, all was well, headed home from Christmas to West Michigan.

By Toledo I only had 1-3, no 2 or 4. Full of fluid, no reason for it really. Got to a family friends shop in Michigan, he tore it down, it was missing bshings in the planet, was a 3 gear planet instead of a five, was a car case. On and on it went. I had a TCI overnighted, learned to build transmissions myself after that. That was ten year's ago, and I'm still bitter over it.

I would recommend Oregon Performance Transmissions for your part's.

I've used OPR a few times and they do have good stuff, in fact I just got a kit yesterday for a Powerglide I'm doing, all good parts..

GM #10067353 crate 350
Edelbrock 2101 spread-bore intake manifold
Quadrajet #335002 from Sean Murphy Induction
Comp Cams 12-235-2 cam (289hp, 415lbft) or 12-230-2 (288hp, 421lbft)
Hooker 2453 headers and 2.25" duals with an H-pipe under the transfer case tail cone.

Within your price range, reliable stuff, all new (no junkyard parts). This is about as good as it gets without going to a bunch more money, such as changing the heads.

This is perfect! Exactly what I'm looking for. Any suggestions on distributors? And it looks like I'll need a flex plate and harmonic balancer with this motor. Can those be reused from the 305 or do you have any suggestions on those? Also anything else you can think of that I'll need?

thanks!!

You can reuse your current distributor, flexplate, and balancer. I would recomend replacing the balancer however, as it is a wear item.

Use an HEI distributor. Use an AR23 or VC1853 or equivalent vacuum advance can for the proper curve.

I see these listed as equivalent:
AIRTEX 4V1054
CARQUEST 57-7563
WELLS DV1853
GM 19138053
GM 1973482
ACDelco D1321A

I have a bowtie overdrives 700r4 in my corvette and it has been fantastic, I also recommend their tv kit makes adjusting very simple and their tv cam for cable alignment/ increasing line pressure.
