1982 K30 std cab long bed 1-ton srw pick-up 6.2 diesel 400/205 4wd. I have turned the steering wheel back and forth with the engine off and with it running and stepping on the brake pedal in between to bleed this system but it doesnt seem to work for long. It doesnt seem to have any leaks as I dont have to add any fluid. Any ideas?

Did you recently change the HB unit or the PS pump?

No. I bought this truck a couple years ago and have used it very little. When I started trying to use it a month ago, it started doing this. I feel like I've bled it out till I'm blue in the face with no results, something must be wrong - but I dont want to just start throwing parts at it and waste money.

When you say it doesn’t seem to work for too long, what are you experiencing? Is the pump moaning, is the assist weak, etc?

I don’t recall exactly how I bled mine, but I don’t remember it being very complicated.

I believe I started with the front wheels off the ground, engine off and slowly turned the wheel lock to lock. Then repeated with the engine on.

I haven’t had any issues.

When I did my Dodge (different, yes, but overall very similar), it was quite a bit of wheel turning and pedal pumping.

Is it just the hydro boost that is poor or do you have poor power steering too?

It seems like I do a whole bunch of turning the wheel and braking and it lats a few minutes then right back to square 1.. Maybe Im not doing enough of it? Im going to try it again today and see if I can get it to last a while.

Begin with very slow lock to lock turning with the wheels off the ground and engine off. Keep an eye on the fluid level and check for aeration.

Also check the temperature of the hoses, in operation they will of course heat up.

If the pressure lines get really hot, really quick, that suggests there might be a blockage of some kind restricting flow.

Easy enough to check/verify.
