GM compass install

Anyone have any pictures of installation or information about the GM compass being sold by LMC and others?

Was this an original option? Never seen it before.
Where and how is it installed?

Looks cool, but not sure if it can be installed without looking misplaced.

It was a dealer installed item or could be purchased over the counter. My Grandpa had a couple of them, but I don't remember how they were installed.


I didn't know they were reproduced. I want a couple, lol.

My grandpa had a similar one in his RV. I've always wanted one to put in mine, but haven't found one that looks right. This one is close... His was on a 78 Chevy Vandura, pretty sure it was above the rearview mirror, mounted to the ceiling?

I installed mine above the mirror and used the screw of the trim that is there.
No drilling and it's not in the way of anything.
I have no close up pic but you can see how it looks.

Warning:
I bought such a one, but as so often from LMC: China quality! So after a couple of month I suddenly noticed I hade a large oil spot on the carpet below the compass. The compass containe oil to damp the motions, but the house wasnt tight.

That’s too bad as it is a licensed GM product. Still looking for a close up of an installed compass if anyone has.

For the money you’re going to end up spending on the repro compass, you can pay $3 to get into the pickapart yard, $20 for the autodim/compass/temp mirror and sensor out of a ‘99 Suburban/Tahoe/Escalade, and still have money left over.

That's bad, I have 2 of them since a couple of years and no leaks.

I'd just want the nifty old compass for the nostalgia of it.
