I still like the little 283, lol. What are you going to do with it?
Going to pull the offending side head off it today with my nephew to see what’s going on, I half expect piston to valve contact what with all that tapping it was doing on the way home. And I’m not really sure what was causing the 1400 RPM idle. Almost like it jumped timing. Btw it’s not rotating assembly knocking it’s definitely valve train. Remember I took the offending pushrods out of number 8 on the drive home so cam on stuck lifter, or piston on valve? Something

The smoking gun might be that I FAILED to use thread sealant on the head bolts. I knew better, I don’t know why I forgot. But both sides are leaking coolant below the 5/7 - 6/8 cylinders. From head gaskets areas. Could coolant in the cylinder cause hydro lock and or bend valves? Either way, I screwed up.

Ultimately I thought about fitting the trans to it, cleaning it all up and making it a rolling coffee table with glass on the top but I really don’t have a place for that lmao

I doubt that seepage past the bolts could leak that much into the cylinder, but I suppose it's possible. If enough coolant gets into the cylinder, it definitely can cause damage.

However, with that amount of coolant getting into the cylinder, there should have been a lot of white smoke on a cold start.

Well, I was wrong, I knew I didn’t remember putting sealant on the head bolts, but that was because they already had them on out of the box. Got to looking closer and it wasn’t coolant. It was just the same old rear valve cover leak on both sides.

All the lifters look like they just came out of the box, and they practically did it wasn’t that long ago. None of them were stuck, no piston to valve contact, Everything looks normal to the naked eye, but I have to get those two valves out.

I was going to tear down the whole block with my nephew and give him a full crash course, but there’s nothing wrong with the rotating assembly. I’m just going to leave it a short block. I can show him how things work on the other 350 that is a part.

That’s where she’ll stay in the corner. That thumper cam and lifters are easily reusable, but that’s 283 needs a stock cam. Bout to work on the valves to see if they’re bent

Well I got the exhaust valve out, well, it wont actually come out, it gets hung up at the end. The intake, and the exhaust on the next cylinder I cant even get compressed, at all.

I moved to starting on the vortec heads for the 350. Its got the springs from comp that came with that little cam I put in back in 2015. What would cause the inner spring to shatter? Like 6 of them are broken in various degrees, 3 of them bad. The outer springs, seals, and valves are all fine....

Google search tells me many things like improper installation, high rpm, miles, etc.

I will go with high RPM and valve float.

Oh and I checked the pressed in studs on the 305 heads for the 283 they were all the same. I thought maybe one had pulled out

I think you're not used to no insulation. Those trucks make noises that can drive one crazy. I fought quieting down my 65s, but never got them to be as "quiet" as a square, let alone more modern vehicles. Hearing creaks, and squeaks, and rattles, and valves, and exhaust etc is part of the allure.

The noise I’m describing is not normal. It was idling at 1400 rpm and tapping like the piston was hitting the valve, extremely fast and loud. I still can figure out what that was

Cam and lifters are like new. No other bent pushrods other than 8, which were out in this video.

On the video that almost sounds like an exhaust leak. Chasing down noises and various leaks does get annoying, I hope the 350 doesn't have the same problems
