I was just reflecting on seeing that bent/warped valve, if you had a vacuum gauge hooked up as an in-cab gauge, or using one for diagnostics, it would have been easy to know there was trouble in the valve train.

Cam and lifters are like new. No other bent pushrods other than 8, which were out in this video.
Is this the first start up? How did you adjust the lifters? It does sound like loose rocker arms. Hard to tell though in video. Noises like that can be exhaust leak too, but it sounds like several loose rockers to me.

Finally! I could afford a running driving 60s pick up. I sold my 2022 Honda CB 1000 R to get this. Went from doing 160 miles an hour on the freeway to 55 lol.

My first truck was a 64 GMC suburban, I’ve been chasing that feeling ever since. I’ve had several, none of them running, all project trucks, all sold before they realized their potential.

Introducing pokey. 1965 Chevrolet C 10 stepper. Factory 283/3 speed three on the tree. She has some rust in the usual places, but the hood is solid. I took the windshield out today, getting a new one tomorrow and it’s completely solid all the way around so I’m happy about that.

I paid 8000 for it which around here is pretty standard. Changed the belt after it left me stranded, changed the water pump after it started leaking the other night. Added some lights under the dash. Changed a leaky rear axle shaft seal. Removed the purple tint off the back glass. Painted the Chevrolet on the grill and tailgate. Sanded the white paint off the little piece by the door that somebody had sprayed.

Other than that, I’ve just enjoyed the hell out of it, had it for a couple of weeks now. She’ll do 70 something, probably faster if you wanted to blow it up with high RPM. She likes 55 the best. I’ve put 800 miles on it in in just a few weeks.

I was going to do the roadkill thing and just patch up this 283 drive train as I went but to hell with that, it really needs an automatic transmission with overdrive and honestly, the best bang for the buck to make it reliable is an LS. I’d love to have it with a 5.3 or something. So that’s what I’m going to start saving parts for. Any tips and tricks are welcome. I know there are people that make harnesses for the transmission and engine that deletes all the BS.

The 283 has a really good oil leak, and the transmission, besides being three speed leaks gear oil really badly. The shifter has gotten stuck a few times, I’ve had to unstick it. Needs to be rebuilt with bushings, but honestly, I’m just ready to get rid of it. It’s kind of a chore to drive anywhere but the highway.

If I can get power steering on it, with an LS and auto trans this thing would rock more. I want to keep the truck on the road as much as possible. Going to be replacing some floorboards and rockers at some point but only if I can do it in two or three days and then drive it. I like to be able to drive it to the gym Every day. I’d like to get all the stuff for the LS swap so it’s down a minimal amount of time, waiting on stuff like driveshaft changes, etc. only.
I haven't read this whole thread and I'm way behind. So have you swapped out the rear end? What suck is, it's rare as rare can get, but IIRC, there are 2 gear ratio options for that truck. It's got a drop out 3rd member but IIRC, 3.23 and 3.90 were the gear ratio options and the 3.23 is so rare, kinda like the 3/4 ton trucks of the same year got the drop out Corporate axle. Biggo boheemyth axle. 2 Options, 4.10 and 4.56, 4.10 was very rare and most got the 4.56. To get the 3.23 in the half ton or 4.10 in the 3/4 they had to pretty much be special ordered trucks. I know I FINALLY found a 4.10 for my dad's 68 3/4 ton and it came out of an Ambulance that has been special ordered.

But, you might find an option for a gear swap now days via aftermarket with something like a 3.42 and if running OE tire size, that would be a nice ratio with the 1:1 three speed and it'll like 70 much better to cruise. I really wanting to get another 64-66 GMC. I'd prefer that over the Chebby on those years. The suspension is truely different and so is the dash and instrumentation.

It was a problematic 283. Bent/warped valve

He didn't swap axles or gears. I don't think it has the drop out 3rd member, I think it's a Dana, not Eaton. I may have shared photos from my shop manuals early in this thread regarding the axle. He has the borg warner 3 speed. That's all going away.

And I see no mention of the 3.90 gear ratio. But now that reminds me, I'm not thinking of my 64 or my buddy's 66. That's my old 62 that had the 3.90 and drop out. I know, I broke that bish all the time. I think I bought all the used drop outs in So Cali back in the 80s til I finally got the 64 GMC with the Dana 60 and 4.56s. Quit breaking axles, spiders and R and P's then. And that one had an LSD in it that worked well til I wore the clutches out of it which is why I prefer lockers now. No clutches to wear out.

Yeah, not 3.90, or drop-out. I forget if he shared the numbers stamped on the ring gear, or if he counted the teeth to figure out the ratio.

I think I'd keep it manual and just convert it to an NV3500 5 speed. It's just a little lightweight stepper and a 283. I'm sure the NV3500 would hold up well. It's what comes in the GMT400 1/2 tons and even up through the Vortec 350 engines that had much more ponies and torque than the 283. Be a great combo and prolly some good mpg too having 2 more gears 1 being an OD. I'd imagine that's going to entail converting to a hyrdo juice clutch though insted of the Z bar linkage clutch.

You really need to focus on the last, say, 10 pages of the thread. He's not keeping the 283

Yeah, I wished I'd had kept up with it, cuz I don't know anything about it other then what you're telling me. I would have but when I seen there was over 50 pages, I didn't even try. If you say it's the last 10 pages, maybe when I get some time. In a hurry today to get off the PC. 3 days in a row of overcast, I'm out of power the last2 nights so I gotta get off here quick and shut down the PC and TV monitor.

Hot rod it’s getting the 350 out of my old 85C 20. And then the 84K 10. It’s currently at the machine shop getting punched out 30. I did a valve job Seals and springs on the Vortec heads last week. I’m kind of dead in the water until the machine shop calls me.

In the meantime, I’m saving up for the Tremec tkx 5 speed. With the hydraulic clutch set up

Well, nothing has changed unfortunately. I did get the block, the crank and the pistons to the house. I wrapped everything in saran wrap and put a trash bag over them for safekeeping. Just can’t afford that $5000 transmission swap right now what with property taxes and getting a letter from the HOA that I need to completely redo my front flower beds which are huge.

I just watched an episode of stay tuned, which is Tony Angelo guest starring Derek Bieri from vice grip garage, where they put a hot 327 with a TKX Tremec like I want in an old clunker. One thing I was worried about they solved for me. You have to use a dial indicator to make sure the bell housing is centered and if not, you use offset dowels. This whole time I’m thinking how the hell am I going to do that laying under this truck without a lift. Hell, they did it sitting on the workbench. Bolted the bell housing to the fully assembled engine, and did it all, bolt of the transmission to it, and dropped it all in as one piece. Duh.

I figured I should not build the engine until I’m ready to put it in the truck and run it.

I just need money lol.
