Can Anyone Help Me Identify My Vortec 6000 Engine?

Hello everyone,

I recently inherited a 1985 Chevy C10 that has been engine swapped. The engine cover says "Vortec 6000," but I'm not sure exactly which 6.0L engine it is.

I'm hoping someone can help me identify it so I know what year, make, and model to reference when ordering replacement parts and adding accessories in the future. I'd like to know exactly what engine I have before I start buying components.

If anyone can identify it from photos or let me know what information or casting numbers you need, I'd really appreciate the help.

That cover is a Lq9 cover, but they fit any Gen 3 truck engine from 99-06

They way to tell is the block is cast front and rear with either a 4.8/5.3 or a 6.0.

Then scope the piston to see if it's a flat top or not. Yes = LQ9 No = LQ4.

But they all do burnouts and run way better than the old Gen 1 stuff anyway.

Based on the cover and DBC throttle body its most likely an LQ9 6.0 from a 2000-2002 Denali or Escalade.

You can know for sure by looking at the block casting number on the back of the block above the bellhousing on the driver side. You should also take note of the cylinder head number cast into the front valve cover lip on the front of either the driver or passenger side head. The only way to know if it is an LQ4 or LQ9 is by bore scoping one of the cylinders after removing a spark plug. Flat top is LQ9 which has ~20 more HP and higher compression than the LQ4 with dished pistons.

As stated, those covers can be put on any Gen3 engine and some Gen4s as well. A good place to start is to check the front edge of the passenger side head, just below the valve cover. There should be a 3 digit number there, that'll tell you what heads you have. Beyond that, finding where it's stamped 4.8/5.3 or 6.0 on the block and putting a bore scope through a spark plug hole to see if it has dished or flat top pistons is the only way you'll truly know what you have.
