I have an 87 v1500 with rear drums, which I am replacing with all new parts. The backing plate, which mounts to the axle is very worn and I will need to have new nibs welded on to let the shoes rest properly. Is it gonna be cheaper to have these repaired or replaced?

I googled the part under a couple different names but I only come up with disc brake backing plates. Anyone got a part number or more accurate part name?

Dorman part #13867 should be the correct part. Have your local parts store run the number. i found them on amazon.com for $14.99.

You rock John! I just confirmed that part # with dorman. And autozone also carries these, 14.99 there with one day delivery to store.

I got my plates in yesterday, and I noticed first thing that its smaller than oem, and with no mounting holes or parking brake cable hole. I will drill these out and attempt the install.

I'm also repacking the wheel cylinder bearings and replacing oil seals while I have the axle shafts out. To do this I have to open the differential case to unlock them.

When I put the case back on, can I use RTV silicone "make a gasket" or should I buy the actual gasket?

That sucks about the backing plate. RTV is fine for the cover. I usually bead around the entire circle them circle every bolt hole. Let it skin up before installing the cover. I got a write ups in the tech section for 10 bolts with the wrench sizes and capacity if it helps.

Thanks for that man that's what I should've bought!!

I have already drilled out the universal backing plates, though so there's no going back. I hope they do just fine, might have to fiddle with the shoe rests but I haven't checked them yet. I just no crap fills my drums because of extra space between them and the backing plates.

Take the extra time and get a couple of coats of POR-15 on them.

That foreign steel is nothing like what was used to manufacture the OEM plates. They will waste away in no time if left uncoated.

Good to know, does anyone know of a big name retailer that sells it? I've looked but can only find it online.

What I have done to backing plates that have grooved on the shoe pad is to fill them with weld then grind them back down to the original heighth/level.
I have done some that was real bad, mostly to see if I could getit rightit.

You know Marty, that would be an ideal repair to me. I don't weld though I'd like to start; this looks like an easy project to begin on. I have been looking at a 100A mig/fluxcore welder for body/frame work.

Will flux core welding work on this job? Or is arc welding better?
