Yesterday i was out cleaning a tranny in 2 degree weather.
In order to stay warm, i had on:
4 Shirts
3 pairs of socks
2 pairs of pants(sweats under jeans)
2 ski-masks
A snowmobile suit
A pair of leather gloves.

And i was comfy :)

Well i got some work done on the engine today and.......... Its been gone thrue befor. I first noticed it cause the rods/caps were numbered when i pulled the pan off. So then i got ancy and had to pull a head, and to my surprise i have .030 over flat tops. So using summits compression calculator i should now be at 10.5:1 compression instead of the 9.5:1 that i figured. Theres no lip at the top of the cylinder from wear, and theres hardly any deck height. Honestly the deck height is about equal to the height of the head gasket. So now knowing that, It will have more pep than originally planned, and i think the cam with LOVE this compression more.

Sorry for no pics, it was dark by the time i came inside.

I got some head gaskets today, got home and looked them up and found out that they are Fel-pro .039 compressed thickness. So now im gonna return them and get some Felpro .015 compressed thickness gaskets. Holy hell does that make a difference, with the .039 the compression is around 9.37:1, and with the .015 its at 10.27:1

So you will be going with a steel shim gasket then. An older fella told me that's not the best idea unless the block has been freshly decked and the heads shaved (or new).

I had a response all typed up regarding deck heights, but apparently I never hit the post button. I check in on the fellow g-body guys, I just don't always post a comment. Sometimes I think I end up NOT posting something I typed more than than I DO post it!

I can check the Deck straightness and verify it, but as far as the heads im gonna have them surfaced befor I get them back.

And yes, Im going with .015 shims.

Im going to pretend I am you and demonstrate how I order parts.

Are the performance gains these metal shim head gaskets provide worth the possibility I might be pulling heads off a fresh engine?
