Completely new to differentials. 4-10 gearing on it now. I’d like to improve fuel economy just a little. Was thinking of 3-73. Do I need to replace the carrier case to re gear?

Going from 4.10 to 3.73 will drop rpm by about 200 for the same speed. In my opinion that’s not enough of a difference to warrant a regear.

And yes carrier break on a D44 if I recall is 3.73 down, 3.92 and up.

What tire size, transmission and engine combo do you have? Taller gears don't always mean higher fuel economy. It often does... but not always.

Makes sense. I have a th350 and have 35” on now. 205 transfer case and Rochester carb. Thinking about going with 31” when it’s time to replace. I don’t know what the mileage is now. Bought the truck 2 years ago and have finally got her back together and running. Just going through the axles to replace seals so I don’t have any issues in the near future. It crossed my mind since I have her opened up about regearing but the tolerances on everything with the 4:10 seem great. She will be my daily. Thank you in advance
