So I need door trim for my panels off an '87 'burb. I've got the back just not the chrome that runs thru the middle.

Why not cut a whole panel out of 1/4" oak/cedar/blah/etc and stain/fit/glue the panel in place then drill/mount the strap hardware? Anyone done this?

Neighbor has the tools to do it. Thought I'd check before I waste $ on wood/stain and his time if theirs a major issue. The only thing I see being an issue is lining up the holes to be drilled. May go 1/8" if you all think the thickness is an issue. I would think 1/4" glued/epoxied would be stronger.

Thanks In Advance

It’s been done, someone here posted some pics a few months back of those inserts made from Wood.
I remember it looked really good! I guess it all depends on the execution.

Still wet in the pic. A buddy of mine at work did these for free for me as he is only playing with his new laser. Long story short, stained water based dark grey, then 1 coat of water based clear. Spray painted with interior color (oil based) and immediately wiped it off a few times.

Plan is to scuff off the red from the grey on the top layer and stain again as needed. The deer is the one I shot last year....a bit shallow on the laser so I'll have to take care (may have to do by hand if needed). The rest is pretty deep so will hold the paint.

Oil/water hopefully will resist each other for the perfect finish.

The smaller sample that has different features still bugs me......the left side almost looks chrome to an extent. He did it for free, if I change my mind and need another, I'll insist on $100 for another set.

And RIP B. Benfield (local), I asked him about this 4 years ago. I never got around to it and missed out on the pleasure. Since his passing, it has been higher on my list to make it happen.

Not difficult…
Trace the chromed plastic in your wood of choice. Cut the corners with a scrollsaw. Round over bit in your router or dremel. Line the plastic drek up to your unfinished wood replacement, mark and drill mounting holes. Took longer to stitch that scrap saddle leather over a piece of rope…

Will be replicating the falling apart armrest in a hardwood as well. Cut to match the shape, add a thinner contrasting piece so your fingers aren’t riding on metal, unless you reuse the tin insert…

With wood, it's all in the execution since it's such a forgiving medium. That's gorgeous what you guys are coming up with and it gives me motivation down the road.

Wood is easy. Stacked leather washer knife handle style mixed hardwood sword scabbard. Spanish Cedar, Ash, Maple, Cocobolo. Simple.

I hate carpet on the doors, so… Replicating these in real wood. Have old growth white oak cured in the barn for at least 20 years. Will mill out slabs later this spring.
