Did you put the starter on before the plate? Pull the starter and out the plate on then the starter is the correct process on some of them.

I appreciate you answering my post.Sorry I didn't get back sooner....work and all.my issue is with the inspection cover it doesn't want to fit up around the rear main seal...thinking about taking a grinder to it.Don't think there will be any issues with doing that cause it's just covering the flex plate.or is my thinking wrong.pics aren't possible at this time cause the truck is 90 miles away...kind of a weekend project when the weather is good. Thanks for your time

If it's just a tin or plastic inspection cover it won't hurt to trim it. Heck, you can even leave it off if you want to.

the cover is aluminum and the motor mounts run a rod back tothe cover and bolt on so I want to keep it.I'll just take a grinder to it or cut it to fit.JUst wasn't sure if there was a higher purpose for it that I wasn't aware of.Thanks for the input

Oh, so you have a 4x4 then. Did you put in a newer engine with a 1-piece rear main seal?

Don't grind it - something is wrong.

The rear main seal design (one or two piece) doesn't matter. That cover will fit either style. Age of the SBC engine doesn't matter either. The flexplate cover only has to match the transmission.

Like Mr. bucket says; you could just leave it off - it isn't critical.

But think about it; there is a problem. If it fit before the engine exchange but now it doesn't ...

You should find out why.

Definetely install that cover,it keeps water and road grime from the starter ring and transmission input shaft seal,if it is an automatic.
Those rods are there to help eliminate flex between the transmissions bell housing and the engine,so,I would think it be absolutely necessary to have that cover in place, even if it means grinding some off, but,it should fit.
I know there are times I think it wont go on but it seems that with a bit morer patience and wiggling they always seems to fit.

Yeah, if it's a 4x4 with the aluminum cover and support rods then it is definitely needed.

The tin and plastic covers are the ones I'm not afraid to leave off. To me, having the flexplate and torque converter exposed is no different than the exposed crank pulley or the drive shaft.

I dislike, with a passion, changing starters, especially if it caused from an early failure due to parts not being in place.:happy175:

I've never had an issue from it. Although I did once instal the tin cover so the leaky rear main seal didn't fling oil all over the place
