Fairly new to the forum, joined just before my purchase....so I could get back to re-learning.

Purchased this one owner from the distant in-laws last summer. She's all original, within reason.
Was setting about 7 or so years. Had one similar to this 23 years ago, but another sad story.....
I've been through the fuel system, brakes (new rubber lines and flushed), Quadrajet, new tires. Fired right off.
Added 4 pints of Dexron III and changed the oil. She's a runner!
Now she just needs "some Love".

My latest quest has been the air filter.
My owners manual states that is should be the A-348.
The one on her is only marked "A1221". No brand anywhere. But it fits, height wise.
Original air canister fits this filter just fine. Sure looks original. Can't find any numbers on top or bottom, anywhere.
Any filter that a search comes up with 1978, 350, RWD, etc., is right at 1/4" too tall, and the cover obviously won't meet the bottom of the air cleaner.
Tried NAPA, Oreilly's, AutoZone, etc. Wix 42098, Napa 2098, all too tall.
Course when you match them up, side by side, original A1221 is 1/4" shorter.

Ultimate goal is get the snorkel back on, as intended.

Anybody have any ideas?

Kevin

Both my ‘75 and your ‘78 show the Fram CA326 for a 350 engine. Specs say 3 1/2” tall, but it measures more like 3 3/8”.

You can try Summit Racing. Just do a generic search and the web site will list the filters and sizes in the description. Example gen 1 chevy 350 air filter.

Sounds like the old filter may not be proper and your just over analyzing. I would say the foam on each side of the air filter will accommodate 1/4 inch of squish.

@KatmanDo I would take the numbers you know about and the filter down to a parts store and see if they can match them up.

You never know that might be a filter housing and snorkel off a GM car and / or of a different year. Maybe it's off a van with the truck snorkel on it, sometimes things get swapped around though the years. Once you have figured out what the filter is be sure to write it down or keep the box top.

A1221 seems like a Purolator number. See if you can find a purolator air filter to match that number. Or, does your local auto parts store have the old books? If so, they should be able to find one with dimensions that'll fit what you need.

Edit: A1221 is a Purflux air filter. Never heard of purflux.

I ran into similar problem on an 82 Toyota yesterday. Truck came to me with no air filter and picked up a new one by application and it's too short. I put it in and hold the two halves together and I can shake the housing and hear filter move all around. Parts house should be able to look up a shorter or taller filter and still keep other dimensions.
