454 Rebuild

Hay all

Couple questions I picked up a big block to rebuild for my step side projector
I picked it up from an old guy that said he had pulled it out of the early 80s
pickup (block is a 78) to put in his motor home he said he heard it run before
he pulled it and that it ran great but you know how that goes
he said he thought it had been rebuilt just prior to him purchasing it
so I got home and tore it down and obviously it has been rebuilt
so my questions are how long does it take for crosshatch
to where out of the cylinder walls because you can still see the crosshatch very well in all cylinders
it has been board with flattop pistons
which comes to my second question

all the main caps were marked one through four and all in the correct location
the connecting rods are stamped one through eight but when it was reassembled they didn't put the rods in the correct order
they are stamped so my question is
since I am going to re-ring the pistons and reuse them can I put them in the proper order as stamped on the rods
when I reinstall them or do I need to put them
back in the order that I took them out

I hope this isn't too confusing
thanks for your help

Cross hatch can last quite a while if the engine is taken care of properly. It seems to last longer in the newer engines because the metallurgy has advanced over the years, but if yours is still there, it's definitely a good sign. I think I would probably reassemble the rods in the order you found them. Following that thought, do you need to re-ring since the cross hatch is still present, or is it just for peace of mind?

Anytime I replace the rings I hone the block. A ball hone will work for this.

As far as the rods go, did you see or hear this engine run? Normally the rods are marked and go back in the same hole they came from but it really isnt a big issue as long at they fit right. I mean, rods gets replaced all the time and sometimes its not a complete set. As long as they were resized and the correct bearing is used it shouldnt matter.

What the plans for the build? Stock? Little hot rod? With the flat tops and the stock open chamber heads you will be about 8:1-8.5:1. You can install a early oval port closed chamber head and get the compression close to 10:1. Its a pretty popular set up on a nother forum I go to.

I didnt get to hear it run
when I tore it down you can still see the crosshatch very well in all cylinders
and the rod and main bearings show little to no wear
and has a double roller timing chain and high volume oil pump

IMO, I'd consider the comp xe274 for a cam, esp with the 4 speed. Unless your wanting something with more lift. I'm personally going with the xe268 on my build, due to having a auto and not wanting a stall. My 454 also had the 236 heads which are peanut ports and are great for torque but will def suffer in 4K plus rpm. So I'm taking the approach as 85c10 said and going with flat tops and a set of 390 heads with are large oval closed chamber and putting a 2.19 intake valve in, with some minor port and polish work. Tho, they don't general flow as good as the, more often used 781 & 049 heads, the bump in Compression without having to use a large dome or milling, should make a difference.. Just my 2 cents! There's guys on here who've probably forgot more knowledge on this subject, than I know at all.. So, I'm sure they'll chime in to help you out! Good luck on your build!
