I had a full day! I'd like to start by saying how grateful i am of my dad, not only is he practically the most skilled mechanic i know, but he has patience! After dragging my butt around, i finally pulled the 80 in for new power steering pump seals, and man it was something. There were plenty of cuss words and hollering, had to pull the shroud and the fan to easily get to ps pulley (with a tool he let me borrow) fished it all off, replaced the seals, put it ALL back together and i'm tightening my belts. Belts have been squeaking, happy to finally tighten them. But things aren't looking right. Ended up i put one of the ps bracket bolts in a hole, IN WHICH THERE WASN'T A BOLT IN THE FIRST PLACE! Why have the hole there? So since it was there, it wasn't holding the pump to the bracket and there was a ton of play. I finally figured that one out after going down to my brothers 454 and comparing. I felt like quite the dunce. Was able to find a spare bolt in the famous bolt can and trimmed it down, and got it in WITH the pulley on. Beats pulling EVERYTHING back off again. My oil pressure light has also been coming on after about 5 minutes of driving, and my oil sender has been soaked in ps fluid and looks pretty crumby. My dad had one laying around on a 305 and we'll see how it works down the road. So now the ps isn't leaking, my belts are nice and tight, my oil pressure might be good and i finally took a closer look at my A/C (i currently have a thread open about this)

My brother had converted is A/C on his 454 from R12 to R134 and was able to charge it and get it to work. I figured i had to convert mine too and charge it, as my A/C compressor clutch spins sometimes when my heater is on, telling me that freon is low MEANING IT DOES WORK (previous owner said they never had it working) My dad saves the day yet again and says "hey this has already been converted you dummy" So after a few good laughs and a ton of shame, he pulled out some cans to charge it up and now i have running AC! The compressor was working exactly how it should and everything seemed happy. I was pretty dumbfounded by the end of the day knowing the old girl isn't leaking power steering and has working AC. It does need a good wash and detailing though now, as i have my first car show of the year on the 5th of June. It'll be quite the hike to get there but with how she's running now, there isn't a worry to be had

sorry no pictures, i was in the zone and filthy

and STILL waiting on the rear end yoke for my Jimmy in order to bring it to my dad's shop for wiring overhaul

I borrowed my buddy's little tractor so I could till the garden for my wife. While I have it, I've been using it for all the random jobs I've needed to do that involved a lot of lifting. I also moved truck parts around. I guess I sorta have a crew cab short bed truck now.

It's a Johnny Cash truck, I'm getting it one peice at a time. '89 C&C frame, '85 cab and an '81? bed.

I'd like to find a K30 crew cab single wheel....and put a long bed step side on it to be unique.

Make sure to pic document it!

Welp.... #7 it is. Took out part of the cylinder wall(which I’m pretty sure I found a part of in the lifter valley.

I feel a little bit better that it wasn’t the original engine like I thought it was. Engine suffix code shows as a 73 or 74 car engine, it’s got two bolt mains, and the heads appear to be small chamber 305 heads. No signs of it being rebuilt before either, so it was probably a junkyard or temporary motor thrown in at some point in the past and has been on borrowed time anyways.

if it's a daily driver, I'd save the old engine/trans if it's running good. Then you don't have to listen to the wife bitch about that "damn truck" if/when the engine goes out lol.

I have a little honda commuter that I use as a daily when the truck is down. I would expect the Gen VI 454/4L80 to be every bit as reliable as the newer trucks at this point. Everything will be fully rebuilt and its a modern enough fuel injected combo that it should go another 200,000+ miles.

Got the rest of it torn down last night. Absolute carnage. Camshaft was broken right before the #8 cylinder intake valve lobe.

#7 piston completely destroyed

The whole side of the #7 Cylinder is blown out

#8 Piston and rod were also quite mangled

And last but not least, I finally found why I had low compression on my #4 cylinder for about a year before the motor blew as both compression rings fell out in about 20 pieces when I removed the piston.

Big badda-boom.

For some reason I thought this was the original motor, but once I started pulling it apart, I found that I hadn't looked at the engine suffix code or really looked at any of the other numbers on it. Turns out it is a 1973 or 74 passenger car 350 that someone had put some mildly ported 305 heads on. Looks like it has never been rebuilt either and had a GM cam and GM double roller timing set on it along with roller rockers. It's never really run right or had good power, but that's probably due to the dead cylinder. I'm betting the original motor blew at some point and someone just dropped a junkyard 350 with some minor mods in it and kept on rolling. The new motor with flat tops and a good cam should be a big improvement.

Looks like it was floored and held there till it blew. Wow that's bad.

Me either... unless they wanted to kick up the compression without having to do any engine work or changing of hard parts.

Between block casting numbers/dates and the engine stamping number, it looks like its a high nickel, 2-bolt main, 010 block from and early 1977 full size passenger car. It comes up in the lime book as being a 170hp 4-bbl behind a TH350 in a chevelle, monte carlo, or other full size passenger car. The heads are 14014416 Casting number, which comes up as 58cc 305 heads. You can see where someone has done at least some port matching work on them, but I haven't pulled any valves to see if they have any pocket work done.

The oddest thing is seeing roller rockers, but apparently no performance cam. Seems like that would be the biggest bang for your buck. I bought this truck from the son of the original owner. He bought it new locally in '80 and had it as his daily driver until he bought a new truck in 2002. Apparently his kids drove it after that through their high school years until it got parked in 2006. I'm assuming there might have been some high school auto shop shenanigans that happened to the motor during those years.

Washed my truck post-workday from Sunday. Needed the ps fluid powerwashed off the undercarriage and some shine on top. Trying to compete with @TotalyHucked with the photography skills (he can take a good photo; look above my post!)

With the Jimmy, I've FINALLY won the driveshaft battle:

After getting the truck with "the front driveshaft not long enough" and the rear shaft completely destroyed and unusable with either broken yokes or the WRONG yokes, i now have a completely finished and usable drivetrain, ready to rock. Thanks to @Vbb199 suggesting Yukon Gear and Axle i was able to track down my super rare yoke and got it today and slapped it on immediately. Great day in the restoration!
