1st trip to Detroit - 100 years of Chevy Trucks

I’m in Detroit for a work trip - 1st time ever. Cool city but I especially enjoyed the GM renaissance center as they have a great exhibit of 100 years of Chevy trucks in the lobby. The square was cool (‘75 c10 stepside but really stripped down. Wrong hubcaps?) but my favorites were the ‘56 v-8 3100 and the ‘63 k20.

Sorry if someone has already posted about this - I seem to remember one - but I figured a post of pics of Chevy trucks couldn’t go wrong.

Very cool. I checked the literature for the year, and it looks like they were using some really nice dog dish hubcaps then, which are different than the ones you normally see. I didn’t see any of those that the museum truck has, though. The vans of the period did have them. @bucket

You do have to wonder how they pick the ones they decide to keep/display, though ...

Those are the RPO PO1 full face wheel covers, and are correct.

There are some other anomalies in the restoration, which I pointed out to the Heritage Center (ie, chrome trim on the side markers, which is incorrect for a Custom Deluxe; wrong nameplate on the instrument panel pad, etc) but they indicated they received the truck in this condition (restored by a high school auto body class) and were going to leave it as is.

The GM Heritage Center is located on Mound Rd in Sterling Heights, but it was already too small by the time it opened. As a result vehicles are still stored at off site suppliers and restoration shops. While that sounds like a bad thing what it really means is that the displays at the Heritage Center rotate, such that you could visit there a month later and see different vehicles and memorabilia on display. That includes other venues like the Ren Cen lobby, the Design Studio lobby at the Tech Center, the Advanced Engineering center or anywhere else a GM property might be displayed.

There are also a couple enthusiasts that have veto power on which vehicles remain in the collection. During the recent unpleasantness of '08, when vehicles were being sold from the collection, one of my Pontiac buddies reviewed each car hauler before it left to make sure he was in agreement with the vehicles that were being sold. At that time the vehicles that were being let go were either duplicates or were not historically significant.

Be advised the GM Heritage Center is not open to the public. It is available for business meetings, corporate gatherings and semi regular (like quarterly) open houses where visitors can attend if escorted by a GM "host".
