So - he wrote a Temporary Build deviation to build a quantity of 100 1987 model year pickups with the MY6 trans (one of which happened to be mine).

I know this is old, but damn I wonder if mine is one of those builds. I've got a December 1986 1500 SB stepper w/ the A833...
How can I find out what plant it came out of?

Also, I'm trying to source a good rebuild kit with syncros as well as a full rebuild kit for the shifter bushings... I think it's the 6553 stamped reverse lever. That's what it looks like after almost 300k miles, t least. Any advice would be appreciated.

The plant code is captured in the VIN. The last six numbers are the sequential portion of the VIN; the alpha character before that is the plant code.

"HF123456", where
H = 1987 model year
F = Flint Assembly, Flint Michigan
123456 = sequential portion

Thanks, K. Looks like mine is out of St. Louis, not Flint.

Rebuild kit is no problem at all. You can get the $149 rebuild kit from ebay with all new bearings, seals and sycnchos. For the $188 kit and it also includes a new countershaft pin.

Fwiw, it looks as though prices on these have come down in the last couple years. Both kits are about $30+/- cheaper.

Okay, everyone, I'm looking for some feedback:

I'm pulling the 305 out of my '87 soon, and putting in a fairly stock 350 TBI out of my Suburban or a freshend up LQ4 (just have to decide if the LQ4 is better off in the Suburban or the little truck)...
I'm not that confident about the A833 surviving behind either engine for very long.

Other than an old Hot Rod mag write up about sleeving the output shaft, I can't find a damn thing about toughening up this trans, so here's what I'm asking:

Anyone run an A833 behind a 350? If so, how is it holding up?

What can you tell me about the NV3500? I have access to a rebuilt one with my choice of gears well within my budget and without me having to do the work (for all that's worth one way or another) I think it'd be a good replacement behind either engine... But I've not driven a truck with one.

Thanks!

I had one that just went down on me with 150000 miles on it. Just installed a rebuilt unit from Midwest Transmission and I love it so far. With a stout 350.

I dont suppose it was 4X4? I'm hunting for the tail housing and main shaft to convert my 2WD unit.

@donnieray

I'm in need of a 2WD setup... I also have a 4WD setup I DON'T need. I'm right up the road in Racine if you're interested in a trade...

Rigged up a shifter for my 833, I'm not sure how it's actually going to fit in the truck when the time comes. Anybody have a picture of a stock shifter for a 4x4 application for comparison? I think I need more of a rearward bend towards the end of the stick.

My trans didn't come with the stock stick, it was a homebrew type deal. It was a bit flimsy, which wasn't too big of a deal, but it still used the stock stub that went into push-fit rubber insulators. I much prefer a solid mounted stick, so I went to town cutting up an old Hurst Indy 3spd shifter and made it fit.

@Customblue do you by chance have a picture that shows about where the shifter placement was in your truck? I know for sure that what I have rigged up is further forward, but maybe that's a good thing?
