Just a FYI- maybe the paint color changed over time.

It's been quite a while since I've rebuilt & painted engines but I always paint the back of the block, inside the bell housing, a different color... just to screw with whoever takes it apart next. :)

Now, there's a lot that I don't know about GM's other divisions and I know that engine colors varied slightly throught the years. So someone correct me if I'm wrong here...

"Chevy" blue is what was used on the Chevy inline 6's at some point. 40-50's maybe.

"Pontiac" blue (kind of a lighter blue?) is what was used on Pontiac V8's in the 60's or thereabouts.

"Oldsmobile" blue (more of an aqua color?) is what was used on Olds V8's in the 60's or so.

"Corporate" blue is what everything went to in '77.

I was going to make a similiar comment earlier, but didn't want to keep this thread going, the OPs question was answered already. You are absolutely right, lots of shades of lots of colors were used before they made a standard color choice. Come on everyone we can make what color was a 1979 engine.4 pages if we all really try. We're not a bunch quitters are we?

So did the corporate blue paint start WHEN the brand sharing started, or AFTER the brand sharing started?

I ask because some people say that the corporate blue started because of customer complaints, rather than preventing customer complaints.
Short answer is yes, brand sharing first, then Corporate Blue after complaints

Long answer:
DETROIT, April 10—Despite its arguments that it has not misled or cheated its customers, the General Motors Corporation is being hit by a series of legal actions over the discovery that it has allowed engines made by various G. M. divisions to be installed in cars bearing the brand names of other divisions without the knowledge of the buyer.

Most of the legal actions accuse G.M., maker of Chevrolet, Oldsmobile, Pontiac, Buick and Cadillac autos, of violating consumer fraud laws or engaging in false and deceptive practices by allowing engines to be marketed under the pretense that they were made by the same division that manufactured the car.

This practice came to light recently when an Illinois buyer found that his 1977 Oldsmobile Delta 88 had a Chevrolet engine rather than the Rocket engine he thought he had purchased.

In most cases, some sort of compensation is being sought from the company. And courts are being asked to order the company to make full disclosure to customers in the future as to the specifics of what is under the hood of a particular car.

Officials of G. M., the nation's leading car maker, said they had knowledge of at least 12 court actions against them in state and Federal courts in eight states. Authorities in Wisconsin have instituted an action through its Department of Motor Vehicles and other states have said they intend to take legal action against the company on the engine switching.

The Federal Trade Commission has instituted a preliminary investigation into the engine switching practice to determine if any Federal laws have been violated.

“The major problem was that nobody ever knew it,” said a Florida Assistant Attorney General, Martin Friedman. In a suit filed there, the state has accused G.M. of deceptive trade practices and has asked that the company be enjoined from selling Oldsmobile cars with Chevrolet engines without first informing purchasers. It also seeks financial restitution to the Oldsmobile owners affected for the difference between the value of the Oldsmobile engine the customers thought they bought and that of the Chevy engine.

Similar suits initiated by states in state courts have been filed in Illinois, Rhode Island, Kentucky and Alabama. Illinois has also filed suit in a Federal court. Private suits have been filed in Federal courts in Texas and Alabama and in the state courts of New York, Connecticut, Florida and Illinois.

In a statement this week responding to the demands for financial restitution, G.M. said: “Because the engines are substantially identical in performance it is our position that the customer received equal value regardless of what engine he received. Thus restitution would not be appropriate.“
And later in 1981:
A Federal jury ruled today that the General Motors Corporation must pay $550 to each of more than 10,000 purchasers of 1977 Oldsmobiles that contained Chevrolet engines.

But in a split verdict the jury held that the automobile maker did not owe damages to at least 30,000 customers who bought ''Chevymobiles'' after April 10, 1977.

''We possibly will appeal,'' said Charles A. Boyle, an attorney for the plaintiffs in the 10-week trial that sought $131 million in damages from General Motors, the nation's largest auto maker.

Gus Buenz, a spokesman for General Motors' attorneys, said that the company was pleased that jurors ''dismissed the vast majority of claims - about 38,000.'' But he said that the company would seek to have the verdict dismissed. 'Victory for Consumers'

State Attorney General Tyrone Fahner, whose predecessor, William Scott, first filed the class-action suit, said that while he disagreed with the verdict, it was ''a significant legal victory for the consumers of Illinois and the nation.''

''This case shows that companies which do business in this state must deliver what they promise,'' he said. ''The jury clearly says that advertising is a type of warranty.''

The six jurors said that people who bought Oldsmobiles with Chevrolet engines before April 10, 1977, were entitled to refunds of $550 each.

Mr. Buenz put the number of claims to be paid at 10,688, but Mr. Boyle said the number could go as high as 17,000. Taking a figure of 15,550, as an example, General Motors would owe $8.2 million. Division on Cutoff Date

The jurors, who began deliberations Thursday, had reached that part of the decision yesterday but wrote in a note to Judge Frank McGarr that they were divided on the case of at least 30,000 others who purchased their cars after April 10, 1977.

They returned to court today, deliberated for almost three hours, then ruled that as many as 36,000 customers who bought their autos after that date would receive no money, Mr. Boyle said.

The April 10, 1977, date was central in the trial. Thomas Gottschalk, an attorney for General Motors, contended that because of widespread publicity generated from the filing of the lawsuit in the spring of 1977, any person buying an Oldsmobile after that date would have been aware of what he was getting. 50,000 Bought Vehicles

The case involved 50,000 purchasers of 1977 Oldsmobile Delta 88's, Omegas and Custom Cruiser station wagons that were equipped with Chevrolet 350-cubic inch engines instead of the highly publicized Oldsmobile ''Rocket'' 350-cubic inch engines.

William A. Harte and Mr. Boyle, representing the customers, argued that General Motors had breached written and implied warranties by selling the ''Chevymobiles'' and asked the jury to award as much as $131 million to the purchasers.

General Motors contended that it had informed its dealers of the engine switch as early as September 1976 and maintained that the Chevrolet engine was just as good as the ''Rocket'' engine it replaced.

Mr. Gottschalk, the auto maker's attorney, also argued that the practice of changing engine parts had gone on at General Motors for ''many years.'' He said that the name on the auto meant that the division stood behind the product, not that it had made all the parts.

The damages sought included two cents a mile for alleged inferior durability, design and drivability of the Chevrolet engines.

AA is for quitters and we ain't AA!

It is turning out to be a pretty decent GM engine color discussion though. You never know, it could turn up in people's Google searches and maybe even gain us some members, lol.

I may not be correct but its my understanding that The plaid meant that the original engine failed under warranty and GMC put plaid valve cover engine in to identify. That's what I was told by my friends grandpa because he had a 63 gmc 1/2 ton 305 like this with plaid
Kinda like how Toyota used the 21RU for the same reason, I had one of those.

My sons 85 c10 305 has an orange engine. I thought it was original color for a 305 that year. What color was your turbo one @Turbo4whl. I also have a tune port 305 roller engine with silver valve covers I think are factory color?

'85 would have been black.

All F-car TPI valve covers were painted silver. Except very some very late '92 cars that got black ones. '85-'86 were perimeter bolt and got their own stamping wirh ridges on the top surface. '87-'92 were center bolt covers and just like all the other non-TPI covers, but silver.
