Yeah, I think I'd pull the valve cover and just see if any of the rockers are clearly loose. That sounds like lash to me. Possibly more than one.

So, engine builder thinks a rocker adjustment. One of their guys lives 30 minutes North of me. So I think we'll arrange something.
I'll keep curious minds posted.

If you can unscrew the tip off the stethescope so it is a small megaphone and you will get a better zero on where it is coming from. Mine unscrews but some dont.

Good to know. I'm going to pull valve covers and see if and what could be loose. I'm starting to loose patience, and this is a good week to get it resolved.

Depending on how brave you are, you can idle the engine with the valve cover off and you'll get a really quick notion of where the clacking is. Depending on what kind of rockers you have, it can be really easy to use a ratchet with extension and just loosen and tighten a half turn at a time to see where the noise is too. Can't do that without the engine running! The only issue is that you *might* get some motor oil everywhere.

Here's an example with an SBC where the guy is using a piece of cardboard to keep oil from running off the rockers out of the engine.

Doesn't sound like you do this sort of thing much, so maybe don't try it. :)

Update: Pulled cover on D-side. Had video call with builder (propped phone) while I turned over engine by hand. We reset one rocker that lifter seemed squishy. They felt I have at least one bad lifter. I put back together and ran, noise still there. Updated builder.

So, been pulling receipts and info to show manufacturer (after calling store purchased from) when I brought home engine, ran break-ins and all was good.

Summary, breakin February, but receipt past 12 months...just reality...

One thing to consider, and it may be moot since it’s a new engine… but I have had good success using motor flush to loosen up sticky lifters. If you do think it may be clogged or something, you might consider running some motor flush.

I use the motor medic motor flush (gray bottle at your local auto parts store) occasionally and am a believer in what it can do for sludge. I had an old ford 300 that clicked and clacked and I got it warmed up and ran it for a half hour or so with motor flush in it, then changed the oil and it quieted up. The stuff is probably just some diesel mixed with some atf, but it worked for me.

Just a thought if you think it might be sludge or something from assembly that’s clogging it up. Certainly cheaper to try than a tear down to change out lifters.

Does the motor make good oil pressure?

Yes, good pressure. I did put a very little Rislone in. I've desludged with seafoam and ris before.https://www.gmsquarebody.com/threads/04-suburban-oil-pan-whew.42760/ But if lifter squishy, and not holding lift, might not be clogged. I dunno. Trying not to live in denial, but consider everything. I also went through parts list.
Even considering doing replacement myself if all get replaced, and if builder feels confident enough in me. Who knows.
It's a big investment, so...

Update, manufacturer sending new series set of lifters and I send old back for credit.
So that part is a very good thing integrity wise. Just some natural stress with hauling to builder and getting it done.

Valves need adjusting or something is fudged up from "cam break in" if its a new motor , if its gotz a hyd flat lifter cam.
Pull a valve cover and check it . :Insane:

Turn you frickin' idle down !:idiot:

I guess you didn't read all the posts Brother.
Did all above.
It is not a hydraulic lifter flat tappet cam...moot.
Break-in went fine, and developed noise, idle not adjusted yet. And as you saw, it was a lifter. Things are well now.
Yes, sad to have had to deal with a bad part, but learned alot. For that I'm grateful.
