Windshield pinch seam prep 1984 C10 Custom Deluxe

We all know how one thing leads to another. Didn't plan on replacing the cracked windshield yet, but needed it out of the way to de-rust the roof before actually installing the windshield, and I needed to know what may lurk under the windshield gasket.

I removed glass and gasket and was pleasantly surprised at the condition of the cab pinch seam. There are a couple of rusty spots in bottom corners, but no rust through. Otherwise the seam and channel just need old sealer removed. I think this gasket may have been replaced back in 1985 just before I bought the truck. I plan to use stripper wheels to remove all sealant, and surface rust. I am concerned about rust deep in the seam.

Wondering if I clean all surface rust and paint and apply a good rust resistant paint, will the now encapsulated rust in the seam be a problem for the future. Even if I pry open the seam, I will not be able to fully remove the rust. I don't have the skills or equipment to cut out that small section and re-weld in new metal.

Any advice before I make a mess?

If it were my truck and didn't leak before, I would just de-gasket and wire wheel everything and use the rust converter/encapsulator on it. I'd just a brush that'll help dribble it down in those seams best I can and call it good. You don't wanna go prying those plys apart, that'll just create a nightmare of getting it all back down where it should be for the gasket/windshield to sit and not leak

Replacing mine soon. Plan to use some POR-15 around the pinch weld. Don't have mine out yet.

Selo, how did your windshield prep/install go? Did you end up just cleaning up the pinch weld and putting a new gasket in or did you go more in-depth? Thanks

My apologies for the delay in responding. Life has intervened once again. That's my excuse and I'm sticking to it.

Although I have not gotten back to the windshield project. I did decide I was going to use stripping wheels on my angle grinder to remove rust and remaining sealant etc and then coat in Rustoleum Rusty Metal Primer and paint prior to installing the gasket.
