hey guys, I've been working on my '83 k10 for a while now. I burned out a flushable link because I hooked the battery cables up backwards. After I fixed that, the bendix in my starter froze up. I just put a new starter on it tonight. 12/11/14. I proceeded to start the truck. nothing happened. I put the choke on full and it fired right up. I let it warm up for a minute or so and took the choke of and the truck died. I tried starting it multiple times without the choke on. it wouldn't start. as soon as I fully choke it. starts right up. I'm baffled by this. :sorry:

also: I did have the carburetor off to clean it. when I put the carburetor back on I blew the flushable link.

When you turned the carb upside down to clean it did you notice any carbon build up? How did the carb look inside?

Are you running a quadrajet?
First thing to check for would be vacuum leaks. Make sure you have good seal to intake and didn't leave any vacuum lines disconnected.

Sounds like it is too rich. If it fires with the choke (which is too create a rich idle) but not when open, you got to much fuel.

That's backwards. It sounds like it is too lean, or like it has a vacuum leak letting too much air in. When you close the choke plate, and cut off the air, it gets rich enough to run. When you open the choke plate and let more air in, it's too much air -- i.e. too lean -- and it dies.

You sure you didn't leave a vac hose unhooked? Would explain a lot.

Lol not that I'm in any position to deal out advice on this subject. I have had the same problem for 2 months.

What was the temperature? And was it literally only a minute of running? My truck won't start or run very well when cold without the choke set when it's really cold. It takes 4 or 5 minutes at least to idle without the choke when it's cold out.
