Sumbitch blew out sitting still in the driveway. The day before I drove it home from work at 70 mph. Dry rot is a hidden killer.

Seen that happen a few times. Sidewalls blow, tread separates, not pretty and can cause some damage. It pays to check the date code and the tires physically.
Many people don't even know how to read the date code,or when it's time to say they are old and buy new ones. After the Dot number the last 4 digits will be week and year of production . I use 7 years as expiration date,I've worked at shops that wouldn't touch a tire 10 years or older. We won't balance it,rotate it,patch it replace your Valve stem, nothing. I'm sure it's the liability and possibility that some lawyer will twist it up that it was the shops fault the driver had old tires.

Those side walls are cracked to ****. Even when flat.
This shouldn’t have been a surprise. Given you’re in AZ, Yuma if I recall, and it don’t look garaged, how old? 10 years?
Sun and heat cook’s the sheet out of them.

What I meant to say is I know you were kidding. But those tires were not hiding anything.

Were you around to hear it?

I had one blow out on the work truck last week. The stakebed sides rattled like a sumbitch. Startled the cap out of me, I thought I snagged an overhead cable or something.

Am pretty sure Fed. law bans tires over 7 years old, but could be wrong. I wanted to swap over some rally wheels with some Cragars and my tires were great looking, garage kept, 13 year old Goodyears. The lady that owned the shop said "No can do" and explained the 7 years thing. Ended up buying 5 new tires!

Pennsylvania with all it's vehicle safety regulations, has no (out of date) old tire rule. As an inspector, I am responsible for the condition of the tires. Looking for cracking, sidewall and tread, sidewall bulging etc. The utility I work for does have a 10 year rule.

Squareroot, this is a perfect opportunity to use these tires up, patch and smokie burnout. Post the results here for our viewing and listening pleasure. Am I the only guy that does burnouts here?

Yes, it was the weirdest thing. I heard the hissing so I started looking for the source. As I was looking at it, it literally cracked open and opened up like a big smile in slow motion. It was like watching a crack in the windshield grow.
