I never knew that. Interesting. So two gauges smaller for the fusible linkThey are fusible links, and they are sized four wire gauge numbers higher than the wire they protect. For example, to protect a 10 gauge wire you use a 14 gauge fusible link.
Older ones are marked with wire gauge numbers (10, 12, etc.) and newer ones have metric marking (2.0mm, 3.0mm).
