What is this thang on my 84' Silverado?

Probaly a dumb question, but are these black things just connectors or some kind of noise reduction devices? Found em' when I unwrapped my wiring harness that services the alternator.

They are fusible links, and they are sized four wire gauge numbers higher than the wire they protect. For example, to protect a 10 gauge wire you use a 14 gauge fusible link.

Older ones are marked with wire gauge numbers (10, 12, etc.) and newer ones have metric marking (2.0mm, 3.0mm).

I never knew that. Interesting. So two gauges smaller for the fusible link

The black part is just the insulation covering the splice from the wire to fusible link. The fusible links are the shorter pieces of wire with the lugs on the end.
