I replaced the driver side valve cover gasket. I've got a project list and I'd love to be working on it, but the farm is keeping me to busy right now. I've had a set of valve cover gaskets for a little while now and figured I'd get to replacing them "soon", but hadn't. Well last week I smelled it a little, Monday it was terrible. It's hot I'm running the A/C sitting traffic and all I can smell is the oil. So today on my lunch break I did the driver side one as it's the one I could see was leaking. I'll do the other one tomorrow if I don't do it this week I'll forget until it leaks and by then I won't remember where I put the gasket. I've got factory tin covers, and I've always run cork gaskets, but did the Fel-pro permadry gaskets, the rubber ones with the steel core, the tighten limited and pressure spreaders. BTW for those of you that might not know this on more modern vehicles there are pretty much only two types of valve cover gaskets. Floppy Rubber that fits into a channel on the cover and rubber with a steel core like the permadry gaskets. So using these is very much using a modern style gasket design. I expect they'll severe me well for a lot of leak free years. These gaskets go on dry, so if you have studs in the head it'll make installation easier. My 84 305 took part #VS12869T Sorry no time for pics on my short lunch.

New ‘85 Grille on the ‘84 High Sierra… Got rid of the outdated aftermarket Chrome one.
Big Improvement ! But still searching for an ‘84 Grille (the elusive ‘84 GMC)

Your new grill looks great.
Is it black or dark gray in the middle?
I'm OK with mine for now, gotta fix the missing piece under the "M".
But yes, harder to find the '83 - '84 ones.

It’s matte black on the ‘85 grille.. but I prefer the gray of the ‘83-‘84
Let me know if you know of any grilles, I’ve been looking for a while !
PM message me, I have an old one, I’ll mail you the piece to fix yours.
They’re easy enough to graft on.

Finally tore the dash apart to replace the broken speedometer cable. It has to come out from the gauge side as there is a collar that retains the cable and keeps it from being pulled through the outer sheath from the bottom side. Couldn't get my hand in from underneath the dash and gauge cluster to unclip the retainer on the cable body from the back of the speedo itself. Bought the universal replacement cable from rockauto that was 113" in length and laid it next to the original and accounted for the piece that had twisted off at the transfer case and cut the cable to length and crimped the square end on with the supplied tool, lubed it up and slid it back in and hooked it up and reassembled everything and took it for a cruise. Works like a charm! It was only about two years in the making. Lol First thing I've ever done to the truck without taking any pictures of the process in the 6 years I've owned it.

tracked down a short to a bad torque converter solenoid, fortunately I had a spare in a junk transmission.

Also removed the corvette servo , went back to the original to soften up the 1-2 shift. Didn't like it banging into 2nd.

Unsuccessfully took the dash faceplate off in an attempt to fix the now broken shift indicator.

Got the faceplate out of the way enough to see the needle broke and the orange slider had popped out of track, so a replacement is needed.

The issues will be:

Getting one - anyone here have a 3 speed indicator for sale with PayPal?

Getting to the 2 bolts that hold it in place without taking the faceplate completely off as the POS aftermarket hard wired stereo is really "engineered" in how it is mounted.

And, the same engineer :321: expoxied the metal clip to the broken portion of the shift bowl, and 1 metal wire is now broken.

Will have to figure that one out ...

Tonight was a night of breaking expensive parts and losing small but very important parts. Hardest but one of the most effective ways to learn. . .
