We went to the Beaverton ReStore yesterday to pick up an old Craftsman work bench for the boys new house.
He made the statement that the starter is getting worse and we should get a new one soon....

The starter was listening.
It would turn it over in the driveway enough that the big block would come to life and off we went.
Once we were at the loading dock of the ReStore, the starter decided it no longer wanted to be a part of our fleet.
Luckily we were at a place with a parts store a 1/2 mile away and so we got some steps in.

With some wrenches bought from inside the store, Max climbed under the truck and got it swapped out in short order.

Poor truck needs to be cleaned something fierce, look at the gunk on the underside of the hood.

Some swear words were said as he got crap in his eye and the old starter came tumbling out from under the bedside.

You have to love the GM mini-starters.
They fit everything, are super light, and have no issue turning over the big block.

This is the old one, it came from the junkyard and lived for a few years under the truck.
You can see that the rubber boot came out of the body and the wire grounding itself out was the final draw for it.
Not bad for a part that was considered done when we pulled it out of the yard.

Because I can, and because I've been in the "which goes to which" dilemma a couple times in the last 55 years, I'm playing with under-hood labels.

A few tries in, I liked where I'd gotten to with labels for the cap and plug wires.

In the course of going down the label road, I ended up a bag of PLA labels. Someone might have a use for them, since the price will be right. Don't know if tossing them to Goodwill would be a sad waste or not.

Anyway, it dawned on me I could, kind of, match the truck color theme, so a fresh batch is printing as I type.

The rotor cap labels will 3-M double side [or the equivalent (e.g., carpet tape) to the cap. The plug wire labels press on. in theory (theory tried several times with brittle PLA filament and the theory needs a hammer (haven't tried silicone lube yet). Haven't played with PETG filament, said to be more flexible, yet. May print another set for the donation bag. Actual cost couldn't be much more than a quarter.

I find it isn't the cost of the filament, its the design and print time that adds up.

At least you found a place to do it. I didn't shop around much after I stopped in to a shop and asked if they'd install the glass and gasket on Crusty. NOPE! Not even if the glass was out and all prep work was done. Too old of a vehicle. I even mentioned again, I'd do all the prep, just need the glass and gasket installed. NOPE!

Yea I had one shop that said yes but wouldn't do it if a lock strip was involved. This new Precision 848 seal has a lock strip as part of the seal. And the shop that did it uses Precision all the time they told no big deal. I had the window and the seal and it was ready. $100 and done deal!

Yeah when I had to get the back windshield replaced, insurance covered because of deductible, however, I did not get a sliding glass replacement. Insurance went with Safelight. I had to be the co-worker that the young guy doing the job needed with him but didn't have. I was happy to help since it was my baby but, I could see most glass instalation shying away from older model installs.

Picked up more future fodder today from scouring Craigslist of all places. Got a pair of Flowmaster 50 series, 3 inch, new uninstalled, for a buck and a half. Down from two hundred for the pair and a significantly shorter ride than the wiring harness last week. Sweet.

Have headers, have mufflers, just need the paraphernalia to make it play. As long as this is taking I'm going to watch for some cats too, might as well. Then I can truly justify an AF meter, although one would be a good thing to have anyway. It's coming along, in the sense I'm piling up parts for warmer weather.
I have those exact mufflers on my truck. They sound fantastic with a decent engine and headers, you won't be disappointed. I get zero drone in the cab with them as well, in case you were worried. I had them for years with just an axle dump, then I added an H-pipe right behind the T-case, cats, and side dump behind the rear tires and they sound even better. Very mild, but throaty.

Funny story: Years ago Pop came down to get his exhaust redone on his old truck. I don't recall if he had the turbo mufflers replaced or not. Anyhow, before he brought it down it was front of axle dump and the 460 was definitely loud with a good rumble. I was at work and after he ran a couple errands after it was done, he called and told me he kept stalling the engine when a light turned green or when taking off from a stop sign. He had it ran out the back and it quieted the exhaust down so much he didn't hear the engine as well...lol...

On funny exhaust stories, back when I had my 57 step side, over fifty years ago, I used to bug a gas station owner-mechanic to glean a bit of knowledge. It was a small town (Bridgeport, Washington), so there wasn't a lot going on. Especially in the winter, after all the harvests were in.

One day, I was shooting the breeze with him and he mentioned one of his "older" customers was bitching because his son had put dual exhaust on his six popper pickup, making it too noisy for his tastes.

I was dreaming of being able to do that very thing and had made it known to "old" Tom, the business owner. Tom mentioned it to me, and pointed out to the "old man" I was looking for an exhaust like his. Tom said he'd swap the pickup exhaust between the two rigs for about $25.00 from each of us (does that date the event or what?).

No questions asked, I was all in. So was the "old man."

I didn't know much about the details, except that my 235, now, had a cast iron, dual exhaust manifold and exhaust. It was years later before I learned the manifold was off a Vett. It was, probably, worth as much as the truck when I sold it.

Ha ha ha ha, I'm loving it. Another short trip find, and Tom Peterson (IYKYK) would be proud. It's getting closer every day.

Not like 'Pearl' doesn't have an exhaust, but she deserves more, better, bigger, efficient. Another step closer without the backstep.

I had a '64 GMC ½ton with a transplanted 250/6 that I put headers and duals on. Boy, it sounded weird, but the holley 4 barrel and cam sure woke it up. Going on 40 years ago now, wish I could have kept it. Traded it for back rent. Dumb.
