nice were did you score that?
Curious why you’d ask that as they’re available basically everywhere
Not mine but one I'm working on. It's getting a bunch an I've been slacking on it. Mainly because someone started rewiring it an it's up to me to finish that.

However I've about gotten the interior buttoned up finally. It already had vintage air installed. I did carpet, dakota digital wiring, wired the vintage air, radio, amps etc. Built the frame to mount the 96 60/40.

Missing some parts so cant finish up the dash yet. It's also getting a Sniper 2 an a burb 31 gal tank with LS Fab tailight fill, that I still gotta figure out. The tank is already in, I did that part last year along with a notch, shock extenders, all new shocks.
Nice work!

Got my Scamazon roll of elastic to finish the old door pockets after trips to 2 stores came up empty….should be in the rant thread everytime I try to buy something locally and then order it on my phone before leaving the store, wishing I’d just have ordered it online yesterday….
Last pic. Pretty happy with the results. Its kind of a challenge to see how much I can improve something for minimal $. Wish my kids thought that way sometimes….lol.

PS, I know the dash pad is faded as well. But first time I noticed that it used to be a dark saddle color originally. Like King ranch leather seats color. Just a smidge of original color hiding I hadn’t seen before. Dash is staying as is. Has one crack where the speaker is, that’s it, but the effort to R&R makes the faded brown look so much better…lol.

Need to decide what I want to do with the seat and stereo before moving onto the seat and carpet. Can’t find anything close to OE style from any of the seat cover suppliers. Not sure why but I really dig the OE look with the buckles. It’s buy something acceptable from online or spend another $100 or so and have a local guy make one that matches. This one would be easy to make.
And stereo, kinda set on a Bluetooth receiver that fits in the ashtray. But need to figure out speakers/amp/sub before removing the seat and carpet.
Not doing kick panel speakers, could install rear corner speakers. But kinda a hassle and $$ for frames/grilles etc. all that stuff I didn’t have to buy for the 86. Leaning towards same powered sub under the seat and maybe just slap 2 full range speaker boxes behind the seat. (Like the ones I threw away last year after moving them out of the way 5x…oops.
Question, the 86 sounds GOOD with good speakers putting out the highs in the dash and corner speakers in back. It sounds “right”. Anyone running speaker boxes with good speakers and good power? How does it sound all firing into the seat back? Feels like it would not be that great.

Sound quality with speakers behind the seat will always be a crap shoot. I use baffled 4x10 corner speakers and they just are a "filler" for sound ambience. The fronts will be what matter. My next plan if I add another mini amp will be to add two speakers hung under the dash, for more of a front directional point of view soundstage-wise, something like these.

I would def spend the $40 or so for the corner brackets and put some decent 6x9s in there. I tried the speakers in a box behind the seat and even with dash speakers it was meh at best. The dash is easy to pop off, I'd do the re-dye and throw a good middle speak in there while you're at it.

Ya I figured the speaker boxes would sound meh, thanks for confirming.
Ya you’re right, dash isn’t that difficult and being OE it should go back in easy. Pretty sure I’ve seen front center speaker brackets that accept 2 little round speakers. That would be preferable imo to keep stereo sound coming from them.
And bonus like you said can dye the dash and repair the cracked area. It’s not opened up and I can get it to line up and look pretty seamless but have to glue it from the back side.
Nothing happening soon. That sounds like a winter project.

Thanks for the advice and link. Curious what you mean about the rear speakers being filler sound and the fronts being what matters.
The 86 actually sounds exactly opposite. The 4x10s crank out most of the volume and full range (I have them crossing over a bit higher frequency since I have a sub) and the fronts fill in the highs quite well. Similar to component tweeters. I can’t send alot of power or much base to them little 3 inchers even though they’re rated pretty good. Magnets are almost as big as the speaker cone but they’re just babies!

I approach car stereo like going to a concert, the sound is coming from in front of me, not behind. But everyone is different on how they like to hear music. My fader is on front emphasis so impact is more frontal. I like to approach music like the old Maxwell tape commercial where the guy is sitting in the chair and music is blowing his hair back.

I get that, but in my experience, even with quality 3.5’ speakers in front, they’re just not big enough to get loud and have relatively full range.
