Hi, I have a 82 GMC C15 with mild built 350 (~375+hp), 700R4, 3.73 gears and 28" rear tires. WOT upshift is very early since going from 2.73 to 3.73 gears, around 3500-4000rpm. I would like closer to 5000. Has anyone dealt with this exact scenario? Swap in a Sonnax 730 or 731 governor, or have a recommended setup on governor with superior governor calibration kit?
Thanks in advance.

I had the exact opposite issue with my 700 swap. The core trans I used came from a 91 9C1 cop car. While it had the planetary gearset with the oil baffles and some other factory performance stuff, it didn’t like the 3.08 gears the truck had. The governor the 9C1 trans used had windows cut out of the outer weights, the truck wouldn’t go into 4th gear until about 60mph, and then “fell out of 4th at around 50. I installed governor with solid weights, that at least made the truck drivable until I got around to the 3.73 gear swap.

TCI, B&M and some other venders sell govenor calibration kits. I’d suggest getting a spare govenor, only make one change at a time, take detailed notes, and be prepared to have the gov in and out lots of times before you get it right!!

Yeah, the in and out many times was something I am trying to avoid. That is why I was hoping someone dealt with the same scenario and had a good setup or something close. Appreciate the reply!

Grab the superior tech governor recalibration kit and start off with the heaviest secondary weights that come in that kit (in reality, the weights are much lighter than the stock 700 gov sec weights). Start with those and the corresponding springs that come in the kit. They should move your WOT shift points to where they need to be (5k or so). The instructions will guide you through.

If i can find a few pics that i took of gov mods i did for a 700r4 that i built for a truck set up/axle ratio and power level as yours, I will reply with those images and more guidance.
