Hey All, driving down the road today there was a thump then a vibration. I stopped and peeked and this is what I saw.

In case anyone is not sure, that’s not how they are supposed to look.

So here’s my question: obviously I can go to AZ or Napa or anywhere else and buy Chinesium, but who do we like for high quality driveline parts? Who sells Spicer online?

For Spicer rock auto generally has a good selection, Denny's drive line, East Coast Gear Supply, C&M gearworks, etc

Apparently there are a lot of "Spicer" u-joints sold online that are just cheapo joints shipped in Spicer boxes. I don't recall if Rock Auto was one of the known sources or not.

Will anyone be offended if I say I hate slip joints in the transfer case/tranny? If I had a proper driveshaft with the slip joint in the shaft not the t-case, I could have grabbed a wrench and pulled the shaft and driven home. Instead I had to suffer the ignominy of rolling home in a tow truck with Blu on the back.

I've never known anyone that prefers a slip yoke? Well, maybe the line workers lol.

For a short distance, I would have tried driving it without the shaft. Fluid would be lost, of course.

Well, all fixed. My local NAPA shows Spicer in stock, but it's Sunday so they're closed. My local AZ showed Spicer available but not in stock; they had Moog in stock though so that's what I went with.

That shiny trunnion in the pic is dry and rusty. There was no grease in the passages in the u-joint. Someone installed that without greasing it, and no one ever followed up and greased afterward. I guess I better give her a full lube/fluid change and get to a good baseline.

I keep a spare slip yoke in my truck so I can stick it in there for situations like this.

That wouldn’t totally surprise me if some slipped through the cracks for one reason or another.

I know that counterfeit AC Delco parts are a big issue, even to the point of reliable means of distribution having issues with fakes making their way in earlier in the chain. Ball bearings are another hugely counterfeited item.

It’s always funny how people always talk about wanting greasable everything, then situations like this ^ happen where they never get greased and the life of the item is reduced significantly.

I personally tend to go greasable on my stuff, but for others I’ll steer towards non greasable typically. For u joints non greasable are known to be stronger, and the seal technology is much better versus greasable.

True story. But either way u joints ar least, it’s always a crap shoot imo if all 4 cups will continue to take grease in the future so I’ve gone exact opposite and have basically only used sealed.
Make sure there’s enough grease in them, maybe add a smidge and toss em in.
