Well I was driving my 79 k-10 home from work making a quick stop at the liquor store pulling into a tight spot next to a brand new Chrysler minivan hit a patch of ice lock up my brakes start sliding into the side of the van for some stupid reason in a panic with brakes locked throw my shifter upward!! from third threw reverse? And into park! Stopped inches from the van! Everything seemed to be fine after backing out of the spot it appears I have no third gear!! Why would I have not Blown out reverse or park? But third ? It's a turbo 400..am I screwed??

P.s I was told the truck was a 350-t400 upon purchase it had A 305 3 speed in it have never confirmed it was a 400.. Said it was rebuilt.. Appears to have all new trans lines no proof of rebuild..but it is a 3 speed shifted and rAn perfect before this..

Even though the temptation to fraternize with you on the topic of alcohol preference is tempting, I'm wondering if it moves or stays still in park? If it parks like it should, I'd glance through everything to make sure you don't miss anything before having to tear it down. It should still shift to third even if the electric detent switch is messed u so I guess that leaves the governor and modulator. I'll assume with you that it's a TH400, but you'll have to look at the pan to be sure. I think it'd be an extreme coincidence that something external went wrong with it before you used park to stop it.

First thing I would check is that the gear shift linkage is not out of adjustment. First loosen the swivel clamping bolt at the end of the shifter rod. When the rod is free to slide in the swivel, go to the gear shifter and place it in the N position. Feel for the drop into the neutral gate, don't go by the orange indicator on the column.

Get back under and rotate the detent lever CW until it hits the P stop. Then rotating it CCW, count 2 clicks (first one into R and the next one into N).

With the detent lever in that position, tighten the swivel clamp bolt.

Start the truck, put the shifter in "D", cross your fingers and test drive.

O no I was wrong no third gear still have to find time to look at it.. Truck has no cluster or indicator in it..feeling by hand with the colum shifter it goes p n r then just to more clicks... I'm in Michigan and it's cold and snowy wich is slowing my truck progress..
