Putting these two threads together, I'm guessing you need to kick it down off high idle before you put it in gear.

That's what I thought. How does it shift ? does it shift exactly the same from 1-2,2-3,3-4 ? Does it hold up a little before shifting from 1-2 ?

If so your TV cable needs to be adjusted.

Sorry for the confusion. Its supposed to shift exactly the same in all gears. If it doesn't or hesitates to shift from 1-2 or shifts so smoothly that you cant notice it shifting, then you need to adjust your TV cable.

Driving it with the TV cable adjusted incorrectly will burn up your transmission prematurely.

It will/can also cause hard clunking into gear.

That's a bit common in 86 and earlier 700r4's. In 87 and up 700r4, there was an auxiliary valve body added. This helps with "Garage Shifts" From P to D or R, and R to D, or D to R. The Aux VB also includes an Abuse Valve. This is used for rocking a vehicle if it's stuck by bypassing certain circuits so that engagement from D to R and R to D is quicker to keep from burning up the transmission.

Other things that can cause harsh engagement is clutch pack wear, where the clutch drum piston is traveling further, and also a bypass getting clogged to where fluid pressure is not venting. If the transmission is working good otherwise, idle speed isn't to high maybe a fluid and filter change might help.

NO Vacuum modulator on a 700r4. Governor and TV cable is what determines shift points.

How did you adjust your TV ? From the carb or from the throttle pedal ? Is the slider protruding from the adjuster ?
