Hey Gang, what is the normal operating temperature for a turbo 400? Since i mated the cummins to the 400 and pulling my landscape trailer, the temps have been going up. Its at 180 degrees, same as the engine temp. Sometimes it goes above 180 for the trans temp but its on a few ticks nothing crazy. Am i gonna kill the trans with this heat? I do have an aftermarket cooler on the radiator and and electric fan right on the other side of it to pull air in.

Thanks

Chris

Sounds good to me. If it never gets much above that then you are fine.

X2 since it runs through the radiator and is subjected to the operating temperature of the engine 180 should be just about perfect.

Well thats good to hear. It never used to really move when the gas motor was it. Maybe it got up to 160. Only when i had to plow with it 2 years ago and i was pushing it hard that i saw it went to 180.

There are LOTS of variables when it comes to the operating temperature of A Transmission.

Converter Lock up, Stall speed, Fluid Condition, Filter, cooler volume, air flow thru the cooler, Gear Ratio, Engine load, and of course internal Transmission component's. ECT. Ect.

But like someone already said it is not abnormal for the temperature to run the same as the engine temperature and in some cases slightly higher when towing or pushing snow.

Sorry I missed this thread earlier BD. I'd have said your trans temp is just fine. I have just posted a thread about trans temp and routing for adding a trans cooler since it has recently been a topic a few times. The thread is a Sticky in the Transmisison Category.

Or course when towing, you can expect your trans temp to increase. And added cooler can sure help in reducing trans temp when you are towing or climbing a steep grade.

Pops is also very correct in many things can factor trans heat. I can honestly say, I am normally the first to talk trash about a lock up converter for them being weak. While this is true in most cases, the benefits of a lock up converter outweighs the drawbacks. Cruising down the highway with your converter locked for example will certianly allow your trans to run much cooler since the rotor and stator inside the converter are not having to slip to generate power as a coupler since the converter clutch is locked and taking on the job.
