I have been creeping around site and really have found it to be very insightful. I have an 85 blazer that was a rescue vehicle from north Carolina. It is in the middle of getting a TBI fr a 88 blazer. The air pp and exhaust tubes have been removed, I am noticing an erratic idle and it smells a little rich. How necessary is the air pump, can bypass or do I need to install it. Are there Amy connections between the two?

I've removed a lot of them, it has never caused even the slightest issue.

Could be a throttle position sensor or an O2 sensor too, if You have the conversion for the TBI installed.
Did You use the aluminum TBI intake manifold ? ? ?
I do not think that any of the GM TBI vehicles used the air pump. I could be wrong on that though.
The air pump would`nt affect idle, the EGR will if it is stuck partially open, usually a faster smoother idle though.

Yes I did use the original manifold, welded and re drilled the center 4 holes. The idle is now trying to find itself, up and down. I resealed the injectors. It does smell a little rich though.
