Oil pan gasket??

I have a non-original 350 in my k10 and its apparant the gasket is leaking. I'm unsure whether it is a two piece or one piece design. I can't read the block casting numbers. Also i read something about if the dipstick is on the drivers side (which it is) that means its a two piece design. Not sure if that rule always holds true. Any input is appreciated.

The block casting number behind the left(driver) side head will let you know. You can take some silly putty or play doh and press it into the number if you can't see it with a mirror.

Yep, driver's dipstick means a pre-'80 block which is a two piece rear main seal. Fel-pro makes a nice oil pan gasket that is all one piece and it comes with new bolts too (slightly longer). They work great and are even reusable.

Yep, driver's dipstick means a pre-'80 block which is a one piece rear main seal. Fel-pro makes a nice oil pan gasket that is all one piece and it comes with new bolts too (slightly longer). They work great and are even reusable.

Pretty sure pre-80 blocks are two piece rear main seal, not one piece.

Yep, sorry I mis-typed that. They are a two-piece rear main seal block, but you can still get the nice Felpro gasket I was talking about.

Yeah, the one piece gaskets kits are the way to go. I used one on an old 78 302 Ford F100 a few months ago. Very easy to install with the engine in the vehicle. Leak free.

The FelPro one piece oil pan gasket I just put in my engine required a SMALL amount of sealer where the timing chain cover, oil pan meet and also where the rear main (2 piece seal) meets the pan. Check the instructions that come with the gasket.

X2 on using just a tiny spot of RTV silicone - even with the Perma-dry line of oil pan gaskets.

I don't know if it helps or not - but I have never had a Perma-dry leak. Not even a drop. So to me, as long as it doesn't cause any harm and never leaks, I am going to continue to use it. Rather that than gamble on a tight seal.

Only a smear with your fingertip in the corners formed by the pan rail and both the timing chain cover/rear seal housing. The silicone may not adhere to the gasket material, but it does stick to the steel.

In this case RTV silicon isn't about adhesion anyway, it is about filling small gaps. Apply it, wait 4-5 hours and then set the gasket and torque the pan down. The silicon will still be mallable enough to squeeze into the shape of any small gaps - and yet hard enough to stay put.

Go with the one piece oil pan gasket which works on both 2 piece and 1 piece rear main RH or LH dipstick you will be happy to see no leaks. I never have luck with the older gaskets its a pain in the ass!

new 350 goodwrench motors are in fact able to have the dip stick on iether side but to know for sure check casting numbers or just take pan off... and inspect for your self .beside that u can look to see if it is 2 bolt main or 4 bolt main

Doesnt the pre-80 block have the casting number on the back of the engine on drivers side. And the newer has 5.7L instead of the numbers?
