Just picked up a 92 Chevy 1500 sight unseen, at an auction. It had a 5 speed in it, and I was hoping it was a NV4500. Unfortunately it is a Getrag or NV3500 (havent had a chance to look for a tag). I was hoping to put the 4500 in my 78, but now I'm not sure what to do. I don't have much in it (it will scrap for more than I paid), looked for threads about putting a 3500 in a 4x4 but haven't found any where they actually have done the swap. I'm not worried about it not being as strong as a 4500, just running a stock engine, and don't do any heavy wheeling or towing. How much trouble is tne swap (is it even reasonably possible) or should I just scrap the truck and still keep looking for a 4500?

'92 is probably the predecessor, an HM293 or something... I never can remember the nomenclature. They physically interchange with the NV3500 and look about the same too. I think '93 was the first year for the NV3500.

as long as it is a 91 or newer, they are not a bad trans at all.. avoid the earlier 3-rail model..
