Hello,

I've been doing most of my build just from reading on this forum. One in particular refers to the Transmission in the subject, 20 pages long. Great read, beer recommended.

My situation is that I jumped on one before understanding the differences between the 4WD and 2WD variations in the tail housing. So of course I bought a 2WD and need the 4WD. Since its next to impossible to find these in the wild, I imagine finding just the tail housing is nearly as impossible. So I wanted to ask If anyone knew of some magic to work or a resource for this issue. I appreciate everyone's time.

Later on there's trying to figure out if I have to swap out transfer cases and if I'll have clearance issues with the cab floor since its a factory auto.

1986 K10 305/700R4 -----> 350/hopefully NP A833.

If you can rope in a 4x4 version, you can still run your stock t-case, by swapping to the larger 32 spline input shaft. Or just locating another NP208 that already has the larger input. A833, SM465 and TH400 all used them. Driveshaft lengths would stay the same.

And all 4x4's got the taller trans tunnel, so no proplems there.

That’s really good to hear. It’s definitely been a challenge finding all the right pieces for this. I was reading that you can convert the 2WD with the three pieces that make up the adapter. I’ve found one part on EBay, so that’s a step in the right direction. Lol

Looks like I have a line on a whole 4X4 NP440 set up, so there will soon be a 2WD NP440 for sale. lol I'll definetly get my 208 straightened out, but the rest should be pretty easy.

Has anyone had luck fabricating or locating the frame bracket that the Z bar mounts into across from the engine? I may have to start a seperate thread for this one.

An '86 wouldn't have had a z-bar for the clutch. They went hydro in '85.

Yeah, I was loking to make it mechanical anyway. Figured if I found the bracket I could just attach it where they use to come Pre-86.

Ok so I know this is an ancient thread, but...

I just picked up a 1982 K10 with 78k from the original owner. It has the SM465/M20 and I found a killer price on a NP440. Aside from the hole in the floor, is it just a straight swap? I have read that it is.

Thanks

Should be, yeah. Especially if your bellhousing has the dual bolt patterns in it for the trans, you can use your stock bellhousing, clutch and all. Your drive shafts will be the correct length too.

That is great! I got the trans with bell housing for $150 with a 90 day warranty.

This is also assuming that you got the 4x4 version of the trans, and not the 2wd.
