I was thinking the 4.2 in a Nova or a 4 door chevelle would get alot better mileage and be baout a stout as the stock low hp 350 they came with.

I wish I got 10. I have an 89 3+3 and I’ve only got 10 on one tank ever and that’s was on the highway. I average around 8. That’s with a 350 and 265/75/16

At that point you would probably get better mpg with a correctly tuned 454

It seems I'm up to 14 mpg with my 496 now after tuning, I need to work on it some more, shift points are a bit high.

I have cheated heavily, it was just a stock 97 crew one ton 2wd.

I have an Chevy w3500 (Isuzu NPR) that has a 5.2 liter- 4 cylinder diesel. I think that would fit pretty well in an old pickup. You wouldn’t make 1000 horsepower but I bet the mileage would be pretty good.

It seems to be a pretty decent engine. I think I’ve put a couple hundred thousand miles on mine. Had a couple issues but I think they were just flukes.

I get about 10 mpg but I’m pushing a big box down the road. I never did buy the wind deflector for the top of the cab.
