There were a dozen versions of that transmission and the GM truck version is not tough like the Hemi Dodge version. The cast iron case one is tougher than the aluminum case one. If you get one be sure to get the bell housing and shifter, they are unique.

The bellhousing was later updated (not sure of the starting year) to work with the 465 and also the 833.

mine is an 84 short bed that came with an 833 4 speed. I have a 427 with about 500 hp and torque. and it is a joy to drive. 373 geared rear end. if you can find one. comes with a Hurst shifter that you will need. and it doesn't like to be speed shifted. about a 9 inch throw from 1st to 2nd. but the trans is strong. has about the same gear ratios as the 700r4.

If you want a 5 speed, it doesn't sound like an NV4500 would be the right "style" for a sporty truck (more of the 3/4T and 1T/Diesel application), but the NV3500 (1/2 ton and S10 applications) is probably a lot more what you are looking for. Not as familiar on the 4 speeds as the guys above, so stick with their advice for sure

I have a 1990 short bed 2wd with a factory 350 and an NV3500. It drives OK, and is "fun", however its not what I would call a "sport truck". I have read loads of reviews that the NV 3500 is not a "strong" box, however I think that relates to the fact that you can break anything if you plant it and dump the clutch.
For more strength I would look at a muncie 4 spd out of a camaro etc., but as said you will need to play with gear ratios, tyre diameters etc. to get a good balance of cruising speed on the highway, without sacrificing pull away from the lights.
Any built trucks going forward however are going to get a Tremec T56 - its a current 6 speed manual, and also a "camaro / pontiac" type box. Advantages include its modern so parts available, not electronic, bolts straight up to any 350 / LS combo, and has a wide ratio range. Should be able to get one from a wreckers reasonably easy, and aftermarket support is extensive.
Do NOT use a Muncie SM465 or ( even worse ) 420. As stated above, these are basically a 3 speed heavy duty TRUCK box, with a crawler/ torque 1st gear. Indestructible, but no use for a snappy gear change in a 2wd sport truck.
