Why would you say that? When you wrap them a greater part of the heat exits the exhaust and not radiantly flooding the engine bay and melting plug wires and what not.


Insulate the plug wires....I do agree about the underhood temps, but I would rather deal with the temps then replacing headers. Mine were a bitch to install.

I’ve changed my view based on readings I’ve done. My headers are coated

I dunno about this. When the PO of my '77 K5 built and installed the 350, the very first thing he did after getting it going was go sink the thing in a mud hole. This was Eastern Tennessee with all the red clay. There was about a 1/8 layer of that clay that got baked onto the brand new (painted) headers. I bought it later on and ran those headers for 3K or better that way. When I pulled them off a few years later, I cleaned off all the red clay. The original header paint was still under it and in superb shape. It actually preserved them. Ida never guessed it would do that.

Adobe header coating probably after the Clay was gone they rusted to nothing in no time didn’t they?

Nope. I ran them on the 305 in my C10 for a couple years, including driving in the winter here and there. They were still in decent shape too when I yanked the 305. Good enough still to offer them up in the trade deal with Swims350 earlier this year.

At any rate, I'm half tempted to shovel some of this southern Virginia clay into buckets and take it home with me. Then mix in some water and sling it onto the next set of headers I install :rofl:

Clay coat...market that **** and retire rich...lmao


...actually clay is very absorbant and unless chemically sealed will not only desperse heat, but absorb water quite well. Maybe there was a layer of oil on the headers before the clay was heat packed on them. All of the off road vehicles that we have raced over the years have had several layers of mud/clay coated on the headers. Once the clay mix was chipped away, there was a very thin layer of metal left. You could literally poke through the headers with your index finger.


Thick walled headers (stainless) coated with jet hot have lasted longer than anything else we have ran with so far.

The headers on my SS were JET-HOT coated -in and out- when they were new...16-17 years ago?

You know how the first time you fire up an engine with brand new painted headers, the black paint turns a dull gray color as soon as they get up to temp? That's exactly what it looked like under the clay. Come to think of it, I think there's pictures of it somewhere in the thread about my pickup.
