phew.... finally figured out how to do my own thread.

ok. here we go.

I have a 76 jimmy 1/2 ton that I have been working on here and there for many years now. I am recently married and recent new homeowner. So you can see that I do not have much time to wrench anymore.

But when I do get the time I am looking for information on how to turn my 76 jimmy into a full convertible. I guess I was wondering if I have to keep an eye out for an old junker 72, 73, 74 for a doner truck and use those parts? Or if there is just flat out kit that I can buy online somewhere now? I guess shipping would be pretty steep for that top though.

I have been keeping an eye on craigslist but those full ones never pop up.

Anyway. Thanks all for your future responses.

Jeff

No kit. You need a '73-'75 to steal parts from, including the windshield frame. It's been done several times before, and some people have even done write ups on the swap.

I have seen it done. I saw this guy with a really nice 2wd and he did the swap. It turned out real nice.

I was hoping that there might be some kind of kit out there. I am having no luck finding a 73-75 donar or parts truck.

Well, does anybody out there know of a good way to find these trucks? Maybe somebody has a backyard full of tops and window frames, and doors? Ha, wouldn't that be sweet.

We have a local auto parts place called Auto Parts Outlet (not the Amazon web store) which is more like a junk warehouse, they disassemble vehicles and store the parts. Anyway, if you cant find what you're looking for they have a network to other junk yards/u-pull-its/warehouses to try and help find what you need. You might try your local yellow pages to see if you have a similar store near you, if not I'll post the info to the one here, I'm sure they would arrange freight. But I'll tell ya what, if you find even just ONE you better take it lol they are getting so rare.

That top would be a good start. Wouldn't I still need the doors and window rail?

I've heard of people cutting the doors.

Yes, you would need the windshield header and probably A pillars.

I would also do some body strengthening as there will be a TON more flex with a full convertible as opposed to a half top.

Don't forget seats, steering wheel, motor, gas tank, and the flux capacitor...
