I have an 86 sierra and the dimmer switch won't work. It pulls back but it will not click/engage. I get flashed a lot and its annoying. I don't want to tear into my column but i will if i have to. I want to fix it right

That's the only way to fix it is tear into the column. BUT, you CAN remove the dash panel under the column and reach the switch that way to get the high beams turned off until you find the time to dive into the column.

Procedure to change the dimmer switch:

1. Disconnect battery ground cable.

2. Remove instrument panel lower trim and on models with A/C, remove A/C duct extension at column.

3. Disconnect shift indicator from column and remove toe-plate cover screws.

4. Remove two nuts from instrument panel support bracket studs and lower steering column, resting steering wheel on front seat.

5. Remove dimmer switch retaining screws and the switch.

6. Tape actuator rod to column and separate switch from rod.

Reverse procedure to install.

To adjust switch:

1. Depress dimmer switch slightly and install a 3/32 inch twist drill to lock the switch to the body, Fig. 11.

You must be registered for see images attach

2. Force switch upward to remove lash between switch and pivot.

3. Torque switch retaining screw to 35 inch lbs. and remove tape from actuator rod.

4. Remove twist drill and check for proper operation.

I stand corrected. I would have sworn the push rod would needed re-aligned in the column. I guess if you tape it correctly that should not be the case. Good info.
