I've read where others have said this, but the TBs on our DDs are always remarkably clean when they go in for service, so I don't really buy it.

The appearance of your throttle body is not a good indicator of how much dirt is getting sucked through it. Hell, the intake for our Dyson vacuum is clean too, despite having pounds of dirt go through it.

It's your truck, run what you want. If you can take the time to actually read the test I linked above and still think K&N is the best filter, then go for it. It's just another reason I don't like buying used vehicles.

Wow, that AC Delco filter seems to be the hot **** on that link. Maybe I will change to a WIX, lol. :emotions122:

I've got a few vehicles with K&N air filters, I don't remember ever buying one before, so I guess they were all installed by the PO's. They are very easily clogged and fuel mileage will suffer, so they need to be kept clean. I doubt I would ever spend money on one.

You can`t judge an air filter by what you see, its what you dont see. TBI and carbs tend to stay visually clean, because they always have fuel rushing by the throttle blades, keeping them clean. K&n are ok in a cleaner on road environment, but I woud still use the prefilter foam doohicky, sock thing-a-ma-bobber as a little extra insurance. Hands down, Wix or Donaldson Paper filters for off road/ultra dusty work site situations.

Again, I'm talking on DD which is a Maxima, not my truck. The MAF is on the back side of the airbox, and stays spotless, as does the tube to the throttle body. No fuel in there.

I never said I think it was the best. If you read my post, I said that I was actually looking to find an oil-free high flow filter to replace it with. I've never seen your Dyson, but my Dirt Devil hose is dirty as **** inside! What does that have to do with the cost of tea in China? The guy asked for some feedback, so I gave him an account of my dealings with them.

Again, on road.

Does anyone know what the average size is of the dust particles are in normal air going down the road? Just curious......

Anyway, now that I've decided to "take the time to actually read the test", I deduced that we should all pick one that best suits how/where we drive. My DD sucks on the paper OEM filter. The throttle response all but disappears. However, I bought my dad one for his '02 Silverado years back, and he said he couldn't really tell the difference. His truck has a larger airbox and plenum piping with less bends in it VS my Maxima. Thus, the high flow rate of the K&N would be more noticeable in it.

After looking at the test results, and if it's something that's street driven mostly, I'd try to find a filter in the middle of pack somewhere, but leaning toward lower restriction if I'll notice performance gains. The efficiency (overall ability to capture dirt) rating range only spanned from 96.8% to 99.3%......not a huge difference. If I'm up and down dirt roads and trekking across construction sites all the time, I'd probably go for the Delco or Wix because they have the best filtration. There is no one perfect filter for all applications.

It's hard to say really. Just depends on how often they get driven, which varies a lot. I know when I used to drive my '91 S10 all the time it would need cleaned about every month. But that filter was also a little on the small side for that 4.3 v6. The larger filter in the 350 Burb only needs cleaned once or twice a year.

now with my air filter and foam precleaner i clean it out one a month as for the foam i oil it with very light oil and that really traps the dirt i noticed my air filter stays cleaner too i just wash it out with dawn dish soap let it dry and oil the foam.

now when i had my 64 it had a oil bath air cleaner and i loved it just wash it out with kerosene let dry clean the bowl out and pour fresh oil in it.

Most dirt bikes and quads come from the factory with foam filters. The oil that they use is very tacky. I run a foam pre-filter over my K&N on the Baja Bug. The pre-filter gets really nasty but the K&N stays nice and clean. Out in the desert at the end of the day I would just pull the foam filter, clean it with warm soapy water, let it dry over night, spray some dirt bike filter oil on it and play all day. "If" I were to run a K&N on a truck that went off road I would not do so without a pre-filter oiled up with dirt bike filter oil.

On my street truck I run a high quality paper filter. Less hassle.

Maybe its just me but I like my filters getting dirty that's what its supposed to do!!! they have a million mile guarrente on them also. The ac delco filter is a cheap nap filter k&ns and made in california. They ha e a lot better flow! And on there cold air intake for the newer cars its a night and day difference. Look in to arm they make a dry filter that's like k%n
