I'm sorry, I know this isn't the correct forum but I don't have sufficient privileges to post in the In Search Of section. Maybe a mod may help. Nonetheless, I have been looking for the metal cover that goes on the bell housing to cover the flexplate with metal rods connecting it and the block or frame. I only need the cover, not the rods. I have a 78 Chevy K20 TH400. Mine got taken as scrap on accident. If someone could guide me to the proper one online or possibly sell me a spare one they have I'd appreciate it.

They might be the same as the 4x4 700r4 inspection cover. If so, that should make the search much easier.

I have the covers from a 400 and a 700, I just need to go out to the garage and compare them.

Perfect, when you compare them would you let me know if they are the same? I have been struggling to find the cast one. A lot of the ones I find are the flimsy chrome ones and only come with four holes. If I remember correctly my had 6 holes for the bolts to mount on to the transmission.

I think I'll have time to check it out later tonight. But yep, they have six bolts from what I remember.

There is a huge difference between the 2 styles of covers and they don't always interchange. The thin tin covers only use 4 small sheetmetal screws, the covers with 6 are made of thicker aluminum and use 3/8" bolts and only fit HD cases that have thick bosses cast in the mounting surface. The HD cases (~'78ish +) will accept the tin covers but the non HD cases will not accept the 6 bolt covers. The aluminum covers help to strengthen the trans case and have bosses for the motor mount support bars, the tin covers don't do / have this.

400 and 700 inspection covers look to be identical. However, the '86-up small blocks with one-piece rear seal have the crankshaft area opened up more.

Oily one is '88 700r4, the other is '79 th400.

These were available on the th350 too. I've got one of those, and a 700 somewhere in the parts pile. Haven't seen them in a while though.

I thought that all the 4x4 inspection covers were interchangeable, with exceptions like what Bucket just pointed out about the RMS.

but this is just what I was told when asking something similar.

here's my th400 cover:

Is this the one you are looking for?

Yes, that's what I recall mine looking like. I just don't want any issues since I take it out on the dirt trails and such for something to happen to me while I'm out there.

I figured the aluminum ones were stronger than the thin tin ones. I don't beat on it to bad but some of these desert trails have some trash or sometimes detours through brush have to be made. Which is why I'd prefer to use that one instead of having the worry about having no cover or a cheap cover.
