$7k. isn’t too out of line for paint. i just got a ‘78 crewcab painted for the second time ( long story but the paint shop ended up paying for the second paint job because of some bad product. by the time the truck was painted at the body shop it was $20k.

i already had all the metal work done. I fixed the little bit of rusty, pulled the dents and metal finished everything so there was minimal filler in the truck. By the time that was done and everything was skim coated, sanded, primed and blocked 3 times, i was in it roughly 300 hours.

That 300 hours didn’t include any of the other frame mods i did (swaped to a chevy frame). lots of the expense in building a truck is time. materials do add up though. $2k might get just the primer and paint for a truck.

if you figure they have $5k for labor and they have charge $100/hours they figuring they’re only going to be in it 50 hours and that’s not much time at all.

I would do some looking around on youtube and watch some videos. there is tons of great info and videos showing how to do things. you can save your self a lot of money. welding is easy with a little bit of practice. getting things straight isn’t hard, just use a measuring tape. same goes for body work.

here’s is a pic of the truck i was talking about. it’s a ‘78 ford on a 2000 suburban chassis that i had to lengthen about 7”. It’s got 35” tires and has a 5.3/4l60 trans and has the chevy interior in it.

Option 2, and I know this is a really crazy idea,
You could just drive the damn truck.
I've got a Subruban, 90, from Illinois originally,
That piece of **** is RUSTED TO HELL, I drive that **** everywhere, the beach, mountains, business trips, family vacations.
I'll drive it until the whole body falls off, it's beyond help at this point, the whole undercarriage, and from the rear axle back is gone. You can poke at places at the lower rear quarter panel and your finger will smash thru it lol.
I'm just enjoying the hell out of it because it's my first 2wd

Bought it for this very reason. Very clean externally and the interior, but the whole underside just is too far gone

Lol I don't mean it like I'll scrap her out, I'm just gonna drive it until it dies, then I'll rebuild the engine, or whatever, and keep driving it. At almost 200k miles now, she's getting of age. Alot of head/valve seal issues. It's about time to yank the 350 out and rebuild it.

Lol, no I mean that body is very solid. Maybe some soft spots here and there, but you still have fenders, rockers, quarters and wheel wells. It's a peach!

In that last picture, you can look through where the lower pillar once was and see the shock and spring on the opposite side of the truck.

Man I wish I had a smart phone back in 86! My 1st vehicle when I was 15 was a 75 3/4 ton gmc square with a 350 true dual with glass packs. The long bed floor was so rusted out so bad that looked like Swiss cheese but, worse! Had to replace everything but cab and hood. Lol

What's really bad is, I bought that Burb in '06 and other than one tiny little rust bubble behind the LR wheel, the damn thing had no rust to be found anywhere. It was focking solid as could be, factory paint on the whole frame and everything. It had come up from Texas about a year before I got it. Ohio killed it in just a decade.
